Venom: The Last Dance was released in theatres on October 25, 2024, and concluded the Venom saga of Sony's Spider-Man Universe of Marvel Characters. Tom Hardy returns in the film as Venom / Eddie Brock and writer Kelly Marcel makes her directorial debut here after previously writing the first two films in the series - Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Venom: The Last Dance opens with Eddie Brock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Doctor Strange's spell, similar to the post-credits scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, there are certain changes made to it that make the version in Venom: The Last Dance retcon a lot of what was shown in that film.
Warning: Spoilers for the film will follow.
A lot of changes in the Tom Hardy-starrer see the mentions of Spider-Man removed from the scene, and the way Eddie Brock / Venom gets sent back to their original universe is quite different too.
How does Venom: The Last Dance change Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene
In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, one of the film's post-credits sequences sees Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock / Venom be sent to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is due to Doctor Strange's spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home malfunctioning and bringing the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The payoff for this post-credits sequence is then shown in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Eddie Brock can be seen talking to a bartender and discussing about Spider-Man and who Thanos is. While Brock is initially confused and decides to go and seek out Spider-Man to ask for help, he is then sent back to his universe. This is due to Strange reversing the spell and thus him being sent back to his respective universe.
However, the opening of Venom: The Last Dance retcons this. In the film, any mention of Spider-Man is removed, while the mention of Thanos is still kept. Alongside that, Eddie Brock isn't sent back to his own universe due to Strange fixing his spell, but rather due to Knull pulling him out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why Sony removed the mentions of Spider-Man in the scene remains unknown as of now, but it does look like it was done to support the narrative of this film.
What is Venom: The Last Dance about?
Venom: The Last Dance is the fifth film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe of Marvel Characters. The film sees the return of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock / Venom. It also sees first-time director Kelly Marcel helm the film and is also said to be the final film solo Venom film in this franchise. It is the sequel to Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
The film follows Eddie Brock on the run as he is accused of killing Detective Patrick Mulligan. However, at the same time Venom is being hunted by Knull's forces too as the God of Symbiotes sends his Xenophages to kill the Black Symbiote as he holds the keys to his freedom. This leads to Eddie and Venom going on the run as they battle forces from both their worlds.
Fans can check out the film as it is playing in theatres right now.
