Deadpool & Wolverine has truly turned out to be Marvel Jesus, as the film is roaring at the worldwide box office, ending the era of underwhelming MCU films at the ticket counter. The unusual duo of brooding Logan and potty-mouth Wade is getting positive responses from audiences and critics alike.
Deadpool & Wolverine featured hilarious cameos from earlier MCU characters, including Blade, Electra, X-23, Gambit, Human Torch and Happy, which was more than enough for fans. However, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have revealed to IndieWire that Robert Downey Jr. was also supposed to appear in the film.
Downey read the with Ryan Reynolds, but the scene was dropped from the film, as it didn't make sense to have a Tony Stark cameo after the actor was cast as Doctor Doom.
Deadpool & Wolverine, directed by Shawn Levy, released on July 26, 2024.
Robert Downey Jr. was supposed to appear as Tony Stark in Deadpool & Wolverine
Robert Downey Jr. almost made a comeback to the MCU as Tony Stark before his casting as Doctor Doom was announced by the studios. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of all three Deadpool films, confirmed in an interview with IndieWire that Downey was going to do a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine.
The actor had even read a scene with Ryan Reynolds. But things couldn't go as planned, and the whole idea was dropped, as Downey's casting talks for Doctor Doom were also going to be in the background. Hence, the studio felt that his reappearance as Tony Stark wouldn't make sense.
They also shared that he was supposed to be in the scene where Happy rejects Deadpool's application to join the Avengers. In the earlier written scene, Tony and Happy question Deadpool's team player abilities and reject him together.
Another version of that scene was also conceived by the writers. Deadpool's application is rejected while all the Avengers are in the room, making him lose his temper and viciously attack each of them in unique ways.
Exploring all the cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine
The makers of the film held no bar in making it memorable by having multiple interesting cameos.
Jon Favreau appears first as Happy. Then comes Henry Cavill as an alternate Wolverine. We even see Chris Hemsworth as Thor crying over an injured Deadpool in a scene that has raised a very important question - Why was Thor crying?
In the second half of the film, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner and Dafne Keen enter the film, reprising their roles of Blade, Elektra and X-23, respectively. Making things more interesting is Channing Tatum as Gambit, who was supposed to play the role in the unproduced Gambit solo film.
In the climax, we hear the voices of Blake Lively as Ladypool, Matthew McConaughey as the voice of Cowboypool, Nathan Fillion as the voice of Headpool and Paul Mullin as Welshpool. And the most important cameo role, or rather supporting role, is played by dog actor Peggy as Dogpool.
