After making headlines as one of the highest-grossing documentaries at the US box office, Daily Wire's Am I Racist? movie launched on streaming on October 28, 2024. The movie has grossed over $12 million at the box office after it made its theatrical release in about 1600 movie cinemas in the country on September 13.
While the film only has a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 14 critics reviewing the movie, Am I Racist? is better received by the audience with its 96% Popcornmeter. Daily Wire's Matt Walsh stars in the movie, which follows him as he "investigates diversity, equity and inclusion practices" and exposes absurdities through his undercover social experiments.
The film reunites Walsh with director Justin Folk, who also directed and co-produced his 2022 documentary, What Is a Woman?, among other docu-films like No Safe Spaces.
What is Am I Racist? all about?
The basic plot of the mockumentary is Matt Walsh, the host of The Matt Walsh Show podcast, is trying to become a DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) consultant.
So, he goes undercover to help learn more about racism in America. He wears his signature tweed jacket, man-bun wig and skinny jeans to get his DEI certificate and tells people that he's documenting an anti-racist journey in a film.
Per the film's description on its website:
"Am I Racist? follow one man's hilarious journey as he goes deep undercover to infiltrate and expose the weird world of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Laugh, gasp, and cringe at his real-life misadventures."
Walsh talked about the movie in his X post on September 18, 2024:
"We are trying to expose the so-called expert class—our self-appointed moral superiors who impose their doctrines on us from on high."
In the movie, besides talking with everyday people and asking about their racist tendencies, Walsh also gained access to DEI instructors. There's the "DEI queen," Robin DiAngelo and Race to Dinner founders and DEI champions Regina Jackson and Saira Rao.
Am I Racist? promises both hilarious and thought-provoking dialogue from Walsh and all the people he talks to throughout the movie. Those who have watched the film called it "good and funny," "both hilarious and insightful," "something to open the mind," and "best comedy in a while" on Rotten Tomatoes.
