It's official as the first details about Christopher Nolan's new film were just released by Universal Pictures yesterday. The Oscar winner's next movie will be unlike anything he has ever done before and will focus on Greek mythology. Nolan will be tackling Homer's Odyssey as the next film with an all-star cast that includes the likes of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and more.

Before the announcement of Christopher Nolan's new film, many rumors were floating around about the nature of the project. Many thought of it to be a helicopter warfare film while some thought it to be a vampire film set in the 1900s. However, this announcement came out on December 23 and has left many shocked. In a post on X, Universal Pictures put out this statement:

"Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026."

So, it certainly looks like Nolan will be back playing with IMAX technology as has been tradition with many of his films. The story of Odyssey follows the hero Odysseus as it chronicles his journey back home after the Trojan War and the perils he faced along the way.

Exploring the poem Christopher Nolan's upcoming film will be based on

Odyssey is a major Greek poem that's usually attributed to Homer. Homer himself was an ancient Greek poet responsible for creating two epic poems, one of which happens to be Odyssey, which became the foundation for Greek Literature. He is usually commended as one of the most influential authors in history and is revered among many.

Odyssey follows the Greek hero, Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who is trying to get back home after the Trojan War. While the poem covers only the last six weeks of his journey, it is revealed that he has been trying to get back home for almost 10 years. The story also involves many Greek mythical creatures such as Sirens and more, and the Greek god Poseidon plays a role as well.

The story of Odyssey also focuses on Odysseus dealing with many struggles back home as well. The synopsis as per Britannica reads as:

"The poem is the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, who wanders for 10 years (although the action of the poem covers only the final six weeks) trying to get home after the Trojan War.

It continued,

"On his return, he is recognized only by his faithful dog and a nurse. With the help of his son, Telemachus, Odysseus destroys the insistent suitors of his faithful wife, Penelope, and several of her maids who had fraternized with the suitors and reestablishes himself in his kingdom."

Cast of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey explored

Christopher Nolan will be reuniting with actor Matt Damon (Interstellar and Oppenheimer) for a third time. The film will also star Spider-Man actor Tom Holland who will also be starring alongside Zendaya in the movie.
