Danny Trejo got into an altercation during a Fourth of July parade. In a video uploaded to social media, the actor shoved through a crowd and punched a man in the middle of a parade in Los Angeles. The altercation was stopped from escalating by other onlookers.
Fox 11 Los Angeles reported that Trejo and a friend were hit by water bottles and water balloons while riding in a car as part of the parade. In an interview with TMZ, published on Sunday, July 7, the actor insisted he was targeted and provoked because of his race. He told the outlet,
"I'm so sad that I behaved the way I behaved. I'm so sad that grown men got to throw water balloons to enjoy a day."
"I would be embarrassed if I attacked an 80-year-old man" — Danny Trejo
Videos circulating online showcased Danny Trejo throwing hands at the Sunland-Tujunga parade in L.A. during the Fourth of July. The 80-year-old actor and his friend were riding in a vintage car as part of the parade when they were provoked by a group of people.
As per Fox 11 Los Angeles, Danny Trejo and his friend got water bottles and water balloons thrown at them before deciding to confront the group. Trejo was seen throwing punches and at one point, Trejo and his friend Mario were knocked to the ground, which resulted in Trejo grabbing and using a chair as a weapon.
In an interview with TMZ published on Sunday, Trejo gave his account of what happened. As mentioned earlier, Trejo stated he felt sad about the way he behaved and how grown men needed to throw water balloons at people to enjoy the day.
Danny Trejo claimed he did not think he'd even get out of his car to confront the individuals if somebody hadn't claimed that the balloons were filled with acid. Around 8 to 10 people surrounded Trejo's vehicle and once he identified the water balloon perpetrator and confronted him, the man grabbed him, prompting the actor to fight.
When he stepped back, Trejo fell off the curb. Trejo stated that no one else but he and his friend were targeted. Mario added,
"It is targeted. There was nobody else getting hit with balloons in front of us or behind us. You know they were just at our low-riders."
The last thing Mario wanted on the classic low-rider was to get water on it. Mario mentioned the group was holding him down and stomping on his arms. He showcased the list of injuries he received from the confrontation, which included marks on both his arms and an injury to the eye.
When the interviewer wished Trejo a happy 80th birthday and asked how his body was now, the actor laughed and stated that he was alright and claimed that they could not hurt him. Danny Trejo added,
"I would be embarrassed if I attacked an 80-year-old man and he's still talking and laughing."
A bystander named Arnie Abramiam, who caught the confrontation on his phone, told Fox 11 Los Angeles that the actor was simply confronting the group and did not intend to hit people. However, once he got hit, Trejo reacted with punches. Arnie narrated,
"Another water balloon was thrown at him. Punches were thrown. People fell down. Blood everywhere. I think Mario [the] gentleman (Trejo's friend) got hit. They cut his eye open."
Arnie further claimed that Trejo didn't seem "physically hurt" but was "upset". Arnie Abramiam thought Trejo was angry and probably used anger as a "mask for pain" but he still felt like the actor's "blood was boiling". The bystander also apologized to Danny Trejo and called him a "good" and "humble" man. He continued,
"Thank you for taking your time and coming down to our 4th of July parade. And I'm sorry, on behalf of our community, we love you, we appreciate you, and we thank you."
Law enforcement received a radio call regarding the fight, but no one involved in the incident was arrested as the crowd dispersed before the police arrived on the scene.
