Jailbreak: Love on the Run is a Netflix documentary film that was released on September 25, 2024. With a runtime of one and a half hours, the documentary reconstructs the prison break of Casey Cole White. It uses ample archival footage and interviews to highlight the role of Vicky White in the escape.
The synopsis of the documentary reads:
“In this gripping documentary, an Alabama corrections officer falls in love with a man awaiting trial for murder and risks it all to help him escape.”
The documentary portrays the events leading to the escape and the subsequent developments. Vicky White was a staff member at the Lauderdale County Detention Center, Alabama, where Casey was serving time. The two got romantically involved, and Vicky helped Casey escape the facility.
At the end of an 11-day manhunt, the two were tracked down. As the police chased them, their Cadillac plunged into a ditch. According to Time, Vicky White died from a gunshot wound she inflicted on herself after the accident.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run showcases Vicky White’s self-inflicted death
On April 29, 2022, Casey Cole White, a convicted felon, walked out of Lauderdale County Jail alongside Vicky White. The latter was the assistant director of corrections at the facility, and she told the supervisors that she was escorting Casey White to a "mental health evaluation” session. This was a fabricated story.
What Vicky was doing was actually helping Casey escape from jail. She was supposed to retire on the same day, and subsequent findings showed she had been preparing to get Casey out of jail for some time.
The colleagues of Vicky and the inmates of Lauderdale reveal in the documentary that the two were romantically involved. They added that the operation carried out on April 29, 2022 was the culmination of a thorough strategy on Vicky’s part. She sold her house hastily, purchased guns and camping equipment, and amassed huge amounts of cash before the escape. Furthermore, a connection to a Cadillac was also established in the case
Jailbreak: Love on the Run vividly recreates the police procedure followed in tracking down Vicky and Casey. Before the escape, Vicky had purchased an orange Ford, which was discovered by the police seven days later in a tow yard. With the help of CCTV footage, officials tracked the couple's truck to Evansville.
After a prolonged manhunt, the two were found to be staying at a nearby motel. However, Vicky and Casey realized they were being followed and tried to evade the police. The ensuing car chase between the two parties put the couple in a tough spot, and their Cadillac fell into a ditch.
The car’s airbags went off. Seeing no possibility of escape, Vicky shot herself. Subsequently, Casey surrendered to the police. As per a report published by Time on September 25, 2024, Casey begged the authorities to “please check on my wife” immediately after the accident, though the two were not officially married.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run delves into Vicky White’s personal life
According to Vicky’s colleagues' testimonies, as documented in Jailbreak: Love on the Run, she was an outstanding employee. She was named "Employee of the Year" four times in her 17-year-old career.
Former inmate Tyler Purser says the following about her in the documentary:
“She treated everybody like they were somebody. She was like [the] mother … that everybody in there never had growing up.”
Due to Vicky's stellar reputation, it was suspected that Casey had coerced her into helping him. However, CCTV footage showed that Vicky was a willing accomplice. Furthermore, her colleagues retrospectively pieced together that the escape was on Vicky’s mind for some time as her retirement day approached.
For instance, her co-workers reveal in Jailbreak: Love on the Run that she told them, “When I go, I’m going out with a bang.” Additionally, they often saw her mete out special treatments to Casey.
Cosmopolitan published a report on September 25, 2024, detailing Vicky’s previous relationships. While her former husband struggled with drug addictions, resulting in a divorce, her next partner died in a car accident in 2009. In the documentary, her co-workers describe her as a lonely person who would take to drinking on most days to cope.
The relationship between Casey and Vicky White is a subject of speculation. However, several interviewees in Jailbreak: Love on the Run think that Casey genuinely loved her. Purser, for example, says in the last scene of the documentary:
"Don't paint it out like he's a monster. Don't paint it out like she was a fool. They were just two people [from] different walks of life that fell in love."
Casey White is currently serving a life sentence in prison. As per The New York Times, he will be eligible for parole only in 2081. Jailbreak: Love on the Run is available to stream on Netflix.
