A Quiet Place: Day One is the third installment in the A Quiet Place franchise, released on June 28, 2024. The movie is directed by Michael Sarnoski, who first made his theatrical debut with the film Pig (2021). John Krasinski, who directed the previous two films, first came out with the story of A Quiet Place: Day One.

The movie is a prequel to the first two films and documents the story of when extraterrestrial beings first invaded Earth. Sam, a young woman suffering from the last stages of cancer, becomes the testimony when the death angels shower like meteorites on New York City and start the first death trial. Alongside her cat, Frodo, Sam struggles to survive amidst the chaos and encounters a man named Eric, who provides her with a completely new vision of her ending life.

A Quiet Place: Day One is slightly different from its predecessors as it delves deeper into the alien species rather than just depicting the human stories. For example, sharp-eyed viewers must have noticed that in the movie, the aliens split open some mysterious pouches. The director described them as food reserves that they use to fertilize the bodies of humans they kill. This detail provides viewers with more in-depth knowledge about their food chain.

When does A Quiet Place: Day One begin?

A Quiet Place, the first film in the franchise, was released in 2018 and follows the Abbott family, with Lee and Evelyn, trying to keep their kids alive in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by blind animals with an overpowered sense of hearing.

The movie begins on day 89 of the alien invasion, which continues for the next one-and-a-half years, where A Quiet Place II takes place over several days from day 471 to day 477 of the invasion. A Quiet Place: Day One goes back right to day 1 when the aliens first invade the earth and shower like meteorites over the entire New York City.

The inhabitants have absolutely no idea that the creatures are blind but have an overpowered sense of hearing. This leads to a lot of people getting killed, and Sam and Eric encounter it right in front of their eyes. A Quiet Place: Day One takes a step in describing the biology and origins of these extraterrestrial creatures, which was lacking in the earlier two movies.

Viewers realize that these seemingly indestructible creatures actually can't swim. The creatures are the product of mutation, due to extreme weather on their planet, a world that was without any light, which made them lose their sight.

Along with describing their origins, A Quiet Place: Day One gives a brief idea about their food chain with the mysterious egg-shaped pouches. During one scene, while Sam and Eric are on the move to Harlem, Eric scours into a pharmacy to take pain medication for Sam, who rests near a ruined church. Frodo runs into a construction site, and Eric runs behind to catch him before any alien makes a noise.

While following Frodo, Eric comes into an area where the aliens have stored several egg-shaped pouches. However, the aliens soon begin to tear them apart, leaving viewers confused. Eric soon leaves the place, taking Frodo, and the movie leaves it unanswered.

The director of A Quiet Place: Day One, Michael Sarnoski, revealed the mystery behind these pouches. He explained that the pouches are food storage for the aliens, which they create by fertilizing the dead bodies of the humans that they kill. This is why, in all of the movies, the aliens are never seen eating their prey.

The pouches allow the aliens to adapt to their new food source on Earth. The death angels use these pouches to store the dead human bodies, letting them fertilize, to take nourishment from them. This comes in the form of the pinkish liquid, which they devour out of it.

Human bodies are used as material for fermentation in the pouches since they are the most easily available on the planet. It's a way for the aliens to adopt humans as their primary food source, though they can still rely on other animals.

Focusing on the alien creatures' mysterious anatomy and biology rather than just human narratives has paved the way for future movies in the A Quiet Place universe. A Quiet Place: Day One aims to explore the origins of this universe, providing viewers with hopes that it can expand into an entire timeline like the Aliens franchise.
