Spellbound is an animated fantasy adventure film scheduled to be released on Netflix on November 22, 2024. The streaming service dropped its trailer on July 20, 2024, and from the looks of it, the upcoming film offers a unique take on family drama.

The movie takes viewers across the mystical world of Lumbria where a teenage princess has to find a way to transform her parents (the King and the Queen of the kingdom) back to their original forms after they are turned into monsters through a magical spell.

Spellbound was announced by Skydance Animation back in 2017 and originally titled Split. However, Netflix took over the rights from Apple TV+ in 2023 after the project completed its production remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The upcoming Netflix animated film forays into the fantasy and comedy genre, through the eyes of a teenage princess named Ellian. Her parents are the Queen and King of the magical Kingdom of Lumbria.

However, as per the trailer, when her parents enter the dark forest of the kingdom they are turned into monsters through a mystical spell. Ellian has to figure out a way to turn them back into humans again. When Ellian realizes that her parents might not change back to their normal selves unless the spell is broken soon, she embarks on a daring quest to do so and restore them to their glory.

The trailer provides a peak into the enchanting world created in the film featuring some stunning animation and character design. The story sees Ellian and her monster parents travel the vastness of their kingdom in search of a cure, leading to a journey where the family rediscovers their bond.

From the trailer, it can be understood that the film offers a great play on teenagers and their relationship with their parents on the journey to adulthood.

While talking about the film to Netflix on July 30, director Voctoria Jensen explained about the film's concept:

“For me, the story is even more universal than the specifics of this family dynamic. For me, it speaks to kids and their parents, to the kind of alienation that can happen as we grow up, and the steps we have to make toward each other to weather it together and come through the other side with better understanding.”
