Marvel’s latest and only installment for the theatres in 2024, Deadpool and Wolverine is coming to the big screens on July 26, 2024. The epic installment shows the fan-favorite character of Deadpool, played by actor and entrepreneur Ryan Reynolds, and Wolverine, played by actor Hugh Jackman, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Deadpool and Wolverine, joining the MCU shows Marvel Studios finally introducing mutants after Disney acquired Fox Studios back in 2019. Fox Studios over a period of 20 years made 13 X-Men movies, which directly or indirectly tie in with 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine.
Movies and series to know about before watching Deadpool and Wolverine
God’s Perfect Idiot: Deadpool
Written and created by Rob Liefeld and Fabien Nicieza for Marvel Comics, Deadpool first appeared in Marvel Comics New Mutants #98.
Since the beginning, Deadpool has always been a much more raunchier and unconventional superhero. Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the movies, has always claimed that playing Deadpool was his dream job.
After Reynold’s movie Green Lantern (2011) was a box office bomb in the US and worldwide, Reynold pitched the first Deadpool idea in 2011.
After Fox refused to back the project, the infamous leaked footage of Deadpool was released to the public. After fans reacted to the well-received footage, Fox Studios greenlit the project, bringing Tim Miller to direct the first Deadpool movie.
Deadpool has always been a raunchier and more A-rated superhero in the comics as well as the movies. His constant sarcasm with se**al jokes breaks the fourth wall, referring to superheroes from other studios, even from DC, as well as slurring and being a more humanized character.
That makes him a perfect and funny superhero to watch. Since the first Deadpool film, the internet has claimed that Ryan Reynold's portrayal of Deadpool is a role for which he was destined.
Superhero Bromance: Deadpool and Wolverine
The first time Hugh Jackman played Wolverine was in 2000’s X-Men directed by Bryan Singer, with Jackman playing the fan-favourite character for nearly 25 years.
Hugh Jackman departed from The Wolverine in 2017’s Logan directed by James Mangold. In both the comic books and the film adaptations, Deadpool has consistently made fun of Wolverine by ridiculing or taunting him.
Fans now get to see a much-awaited team-up between these characters and feel an emotional story, as explained by director Shawn Levy, and the two protagonists Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool and Wolverine.
Mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Since the word mutant was first introduced in Ms. Marvel in 2022, fans have eagerly awaited these characters' arrival in the main timeline of MCU.
The first official look at Marvel’s interpretation of these characters was seen in the post-credit scene of The Marvels (2023) featuring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris among others. There, Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, gets thrown into a universe where mutants Beast and Binary inspect her.
Deadpool is going to work as a catalyst in this movie, which will provide a better understanding with Marvel’s plans to introduce mutants in the main timeline.
