The Fall Guy is gearing up for its theatrical release after its initial SXSW premiere on March 12, 2024, on May 3, 2024, and there is massive excitement surrounding it. The film stars two of last year's most acclaimed performers, Ryan Gosling, who blew the world away with his portrayal of Ken in Barbie, and Emily Blunt, who received massive acclaim for her performance in Oppenheimer.
Unknown to many, this upcoming David Leitch film is actually based on a 1980s television show of the same name. The Fall Guy television series premiered on November 4, 1981, and concluded on May 2, 1986, and was consistently amongst the fan-favorite shows of the time.
Sharing a similar premise to the Ryan Gosling film, The Fall Guy television series followed Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman, who uses his skills to give a great show to fans and uses the same to capture criminals and outlaws outside the set. The series ran for five seasons.
What was The Fall Guy television series all about?
A classic '80s TV show from ABC, The Fall Guy was originally broadcast from November 4, 1981, to May 2, 1986. Over five seasons, the series followed Colt Seavers (played by Lee Majors), a stuntman on the set and a bounty hunter outside it. But like his set life, where he always played second fiddle to the more recognized heroes, he also struggled with getting the girl in real life and mostly ended up as second fiddle to someone else.
The synopsis of the series reads:
"Lee Majors plays Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a bounty hunter. He uses his physical skills and knowledge of stunt effects to capture fugitives and criminals. He is accompanied by his cousin and stuntman-in-training, Howie Munson, and occasionally by fellow stuntwoman Jody Banks."
The series additionally starred Douglas Barr, Heather Thomas, Jo Ann Pflug, and Markie Post. Apart from the show's plot, the intro was also quite famous. The intro song, which was sung by Majors himself, was later released as a single as well.
What is Ryan Gosling's The Fall Guy about?
Following on the same lines and working more like a reboot, the upcoming movie The Fall Guy also follows Colt Seavers, now played by Gosling, who is an aging but talented stuntman. The film focuses on a single incident where the main actor of the film Colt is working on and goes missing, forcing Colt into action.
The official synopsis of the film gives a more elaborate answer to what fans can expect from the movie. It reads:
"After leaving the business one year earlier, battle-scarred stuntman Colt Seavers springs back into action when the star of a big studio movie suddenly disappears. As the mystery surrounding the missing actor deepens, Colt soon finds himself ensnared in a sinister plot that pushes him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt."
Emily Blunt plays Jody Moreno, a film director, and Colt's ex-girlfriend. Apart from Blunt and Gosling, the film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, and Stephanie Hsu, among others.
The Fall Guy received great critical acclaim upon its premiere at SXSW and currently sits at 89% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. The film will premiere theatrically across the United States on May 3, 2024.
