The comedians Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri met while studying at New York University. Their friendship blossomed after they performed together in a classmate's comedy sketch, and the two have remained close friends ever since. While reminiscing about the beginning of their friendship, Edebiri told Entertainment Weekly in August 2023 that they were both "attracted to each other's sensibilities."

Their camaraderie was on full display when they starred together in the three-episode miniseries Ayo and Rachel Are Single on Comedy Central in 2020. A few years later, they collaborated again on the satirical comedy film Bottoms, directed by another NYU alum, Emma Seligman.

While promoting the film on August 25, 2023, the longtime friends took the Buzzfeed BFF test, where they answered a series of questions about each other. While asked about "the first time they made you laugh," the Shiva Baby actress replied:

Meet two brothers drawn into a life of crime when there father passes HERE

"When I was drunk at a party."

Edebiri corrected her, stating that it was right after their college sketch when they hung out together that Sennott made her laugh by going on about cookies.

In an interview with Variety dated April 2023, Rachel Sennott shared that Bottoms is a female take on coming-of-age teen comedies like American Pie and Superbad. She noted that the characters "use feminism to their advantage" and elaborated:

"The characters in the movie use feminism to their advantage. But we didn’t just want to copy another movie that’s already great and just put girls in it. We wanted to update it and make it personal to ourselves."
