Challengers is a 2024 romantic sports drama movie directed by Luca Guadagnino, and starring the likes of Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor. The movie, released on July 24, 2024, focuses on a former Tennis prodigy and current coach whose current protege, her husband, is pitted against her ex-boyfriend. The movie has the following official synopsis, and is now nearing a streaming release as well:
“Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, transformed her husband into a champion. But to overcome a recent losing streak and redeem himself, he'll need to face off against his former best friend, and Tashi's ex-boyfriend.”
According to Variety, Challengers is already available for rent on multiple online platforms including Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime. Now, it will also be available to stream on Prime Video starting 19th September.
Zendaya’s Challengers to hit streaming via Amazon Prime
Zendaya has found consistent success via her recent projects, and Challengers has also followed suit. It opened to a commanding $15 million weekend in April and has till date garnered $71.3 million worldwide. That obviously has scope for improvement considering the overall budget of $55 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
The streaming release is now set to impact the earnings further. Challengers released to generally positive reviews, and currently has an audience rating of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety’s Peter Debruge called the movie “the steamiest and funniest sports-centric love triangle since Bull Durham.”
And while Challengers was not able to find success at the box office as well, it was largely met with positive critical reviews. Further, the performances by the trio of starring actors in Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist were also praised. However, even as the movie has till date managed to garner earnings that only exceed its budget by around $16 million, it might get a new lease of life on streaming platforms.
The quick release on Amazon Prime and Apple TV+ means that the movie will be able to stream on the said platforms starting from September 19. This comes after the movie was also recently put up for rent on multiple platforms, including both Amazon Prime and Apple TV+.
Challengers was initially set for a digital debut on MGM+ back in July. However, the move to Prime video is now expected to expose it to a much wider audience. Regardless, the movie represents one of many successful coups for Zendaya, who has enjoyed a stellar run recently. Starring in Dune 2, the actress saw the Timothee Chalamet-starrer grossing more than $700 million worldwide, which was after the success that Spider-Man: No Way Home received.
The 2021 Spider-Man movie, which also starred Zendaya’s partner Tom Holland, boasted of both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprising their own versions of Peter Parker. It also grossed more than $800 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The recent trend has undoubtedly cemented Zendaya as one of the most marketable female stars in Hollywood.
Her work in Challengers has simply added to that progress, and also gave the actress a chance to showcase her vast acting skills. Starring in a sports-oriented drama, Zendaya’s character is seen being involved in an intense love-triangle which translates to an intensely competitive game between her ex-partner and her husband.
While a range of fans may have failed to catch the movie during its theatrical run, they have to only wait until September 19th to catch it online.
