28 Years Later is an upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle. It is the third installment in the 28 Days Later film series, which includes 28 Days Later, released in 2002, and 28 Weeks Later, released in 2007. The movie is slated to release on June 20, 2025.
28 Years Later follows a group of survivors living in an island community to protect themselves from the rage virus that turns humans into zombies. The film was primarily shot in the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber regions of Northern England.
The film's official synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:
"It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway."
It continues:
"When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well."
The filming locations of 28 Years Later explored in detail
Danny Boyle's long-awaited sequel, 28 Years Later, is set in post-apocalyptic Britain and was filmed between May 7, 2024, and July 29, 2024. The movie was primarily shot in Northern England, in regions like the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber.
North East England
The upcoming movie was filmed in several locations across North East England, including Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, and Durham. In May 2024, the crew shot on Northumberland's Holy Island (Lindisfarne), a tidal island with a rich religious history as a center of Celtic Christianity in the 6th century, as per Britannica.
Other Northumberland filming spots included Hexham, Rothbury, Bellingham, Kielder Forest, and Plankey Mill Farm near Langley and Bardon Mill. These locations were chosen to depict the film's island community and surrounding landscapes.
Filming also took place in the city of Newcastle in Tyne and Wear and the Waskerley village in Durham county.
Yorkshire and the Humber
The counties of North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire in the region of Yorkshire and the Humber was another major filming location.
The scenic beauty of the villages Melsonby and Redmire along with the cathedral city of Ripon in North Yorkshire were captured for the movie in July 2024. Some scenes were shot in the surrounding Aysgarth Falls and the 12th-century Fountains Abbey.
Also, the Dunn Sports Center in Bradford, West Yorkshire was used to film additional scenes in September 2024.
Somerset, South West England
The Cheddar Gorge and the Priddy village in Somerset county will also make an appearance in the movie.
What is 28 Years Later about?
From the looks of the film's trailer, the survivors in 28 Years Later seem to be part of a religious cult of some kind as they rebuild society almost 30 years after the virus destroyed human civilization. Additionally, Lindisfarne's religious significance and its isolated location make it the perfect choice for a cultish setting.
Moreover, Ralph Fiennes gave fans a sneak peek into the film's plot during an interview with Indie Wire in October 2024. He said that he plays a doctor in the film who is enlisted by a young boy to help save "his dying mother."
"Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain," Fiennes stated.
He continued:
"But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good."
