A Christmas Story Christmas, the sequel to Bob Clark's 1983 film A Christmas Story, made its theatrical release on November 17, 2022. For the 2022 film, Director Clay Kaytis wrote the script in collaboration with Nick Schenk. The movie is based on a story part of Jean Shepherd's 1966 short story collection In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.
The story of A Christmas Story Christmas is set 30 years after the initial movie. It revolves around its central protagonist Ralphie Parker, now an adult having a family with two kids. After the death of Ralphie's father, "the Old Man," he decides to make a journey back to Hohman, Indiana, to console his mourning mother Mrs. Parker. With all his family members in one place, Ralphie plans to gift them a special Christmas in honor of his father's memory.
The town of Hohman, Indiana, is completely fictional. The team started its shooting in late February 2022, which involved creating reproductions of the home from the original movie and the neighborhood to get back the authentic ambiance. The filming of A Christmas Story Christmas mainly took place around Hungary and Bulgaria.
A Christmas Story Christmas: All filming locations explored
1) Sofia, Bulgaria
In A Christmas Story Christmas, a major chunk of the scenes that came to be called the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, were shot in Bulgaria. This capital city was perfect for creating the set for a snowy winter without compromising the movie's budget.
Actor Zack Ward, who played the role of Bully Scut Farkus, talked about the movie's filming location in a conversation with Distractify, published on November 17, 2022.
"We filmed in Bulgaria. In Sofia, Bulgaria; it had to do with snow. And it had to do with rebuilding sets. For a film like A Christmas Story, you know, it's not a $100 million movie where you can just make anything you want here in L.A. So you have to be very penny-wise in order to get it on the screen," he said.
Reportedly, this is the place where a replica of Ralphie's childhood house was constructed along with the neighboring houses. The set was designed to match the period from the 1940s to the 1970s.
2) Hungary
Though a majority of the movie was shot in Sofia, some scenes were shot in the European country of Hungary. This place is known for its rich history and medieval architecture. The streets are filled with lines of baroque buildings at a stretch, comprising historical sites including the Buda Castle, Hungarian Parliament Buildings, St. Stephen's Basilica, Matthias Church, Hungarian National Gallery, etc.
Due to its antiquity, some street shots in A Christmas Story Christmas were shot in Hungary to provide the ambiance, as the movie is set in the early 1970s.
3) Toronto, Canada

Parts of the scenes in the original movie were shot in Toronto, Canada. This involved the Christmas tree lot, the elementary school, and the Chinese restaurant Bo'Ling Chop Suey Palace. In A Christmas Story Christmas, viewers can see parts of the nostalgia returning, with the team showing the Chinese resturant and Christmas tree lot back in the sequel.
Shooting in the snowy streets of Toronto strengthened the movie's connection with the original movie, showing the changes that took place in Hohman after 30 years.
4) Cleveland, Ohio
A major part of A Christmas Story was shot in Cleveland, Ohio. This involved Ralphie's childhood home, the Leg Lamp, the Bumpus House, and specially the Higbees's department store. In A Christmas Story Christmas, the team decided to reshoot the outside shots of the Parker's residence from the original film.
Additionally, in the sequel, the Highbee's department store again becomes the place where the kids go to tell Santa what they want for Christmas. These locations bring back the nostalgia for fans of the original movie and connect the new generation of Parkers with these classic landmarks.
