Steven Soderbergh's new film, Black Bag, is a riveting crime-thriller drama that pits married spies Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender against each other. The story was written by David Koop. For Soderberg, the upcoming film is a reunion with Fassbender, who starred in his 2011 film Haywire, as well as Blanchett, who starred in his 2006 film The Good German and again in his Ocean's 8 in 2018.
The entire project came together pretty quickly, with news of it hitting the desks of studios and streamers as a hot package in mid-January 2024, per The Hollywood Reporter. Four months later, in May 2024, the production had already started filming. Black Bag is set in the United Kingdom and was filmed all over London.
Nearly a year after filming, fans will be able to see the new espionage thriller in movie theaters on March 14, 2025.

Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender's spy thriller Black Bag is set in the United Kingdom and London, England served as the backdrop for the entire film.
The UK's largest metropolis has been a famous filming location for movie and television sets, with its iconic landmarks, diverse geography, sprawling architecture and memorable locations. It has also served as the setting for several spy films over the decades, including the Mission: Impossible series, James Bond movies, and more recently Netflix's Black Doves.
Black Bag's production also embraced London as its backdrop, filming its scenes all over the rich cinematic and cultural backdrop and many recognizable places all over the city. In May 2024, per Daily Mail UK, Cate Blanchett was photographed filming the movie on the streets of Marylebone, which is a chic residential area filled with indie boutiques, cozy cafes and restaurants located in Central London.
Michael Fassbender was also spotted filming a fishing scene for the movie in May in Buckinghamshire, about 40 miles north of Central London. The ceremonial county is known for its stunning country parks, historic venues and rural locations, including several fishing areas.
What is Black Bag all about?
The movie primarily follows Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as Kathryn and George Woodhouse, both legendary spies who are also married. Focus Features released the official trailer of the upcoming film on YouTube on December 17, 2024, giving fans a glimpse of some tense action sequences.
It also teases the main plot setup for the story, which involves George on a new mission — find the leak, the person who stole something valuable that could lead to thousands of deaths. However, his wife is the main suspect in the case, and it will turn his personal and professional life upside down, leading to some hard decisions.
The official logline, per IMDb, reads:
"When intelligence agent Kathryn Wodehouse is suspected of betraying the nation, her husband—also a legendary agent—faces the ultimate test of whether to be loyal to his marriage, or his country."
Besides Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as the main characters playing married spies in the movie, the cast also includes Pierce Brosnan, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Rege-Jean Page and Tom Burke.
