Most of the film's first half was shot in Alberta's famous Canadian Rockies mountain range.
The title Brokeback Mountain is not a real location and was depicted using a combination of Mount Lougheed in Canmore as well as the Fortress Mountain and Moose Mountain in Kananaskis Country.
The film's campsite sequences were captured at various locations in Alberta, including Upper Kananaskis Lake, Elbow Falls, Goat Creek and Canyon Creek. Other locations that appear in the movie are the village of Cowley, Fort Macleod town and the city of Calgary.
The bar scene where the two men first meet was shot at the nearly 100-year-old bar named The Blue in Carseland, Alberta. Similarly, Ennis and Alma's wedding scene was filmed at St Thomas’ Anglican Church, which is only 20 miles southeast of Calgary. Moreover, the town of Rockyford in the northeast of Calgary posed as the setting for the rodeo scenes in Texas.
Lastly, a small portion of the film was shot in La Mesilla in New Mexico and Wyoming in the United States.
