Netflix's latest documentary, Jailbreak: Love on the Run, covers the fascinating case of Casey White's escape from prison, which was facilitated by Vicky White, an experienced correctional officer, who fell in love with Casey. The two escaped the prison to start a new life together but instead became the subjects of one of the most widely publicized manhunts in recent history.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run covers this intriguing but tragic case, which ended with Vicky White dying after a difficult car chase with the police. Casey White, meanwhile, survived and was taken back to prison with additional charges on his already heavy rap sheet. He continues to remain in prison as of today.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run retells their story with the help of witnesses and those involved in the case. The synopsis for the movie reads:
"An Alabama corrections officer falls in love with a man awaiting trial for murder and risks it all to help him escape."
Casey White was already awaiting trial for capital murder but after this attempt to escape, he was also charged with first-degree prison escape and was charged with causing Vicky White's death.
Who was Casey White and what did he do?
Casey White was first brought to Lauderdale County Jail in 2020, where he met Vicky, a correctional officer of the prison. He was waiting for his trial for the murder of 58-year-old Connie Ridgeway. He had confessed to the crime but had also retracted his statement later claiming insanity.
However, this murder was hardly his only crime. In addition to the murder charges, Casey was already serving 75 years in prison. His various charges included attempted murder, two counts of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, and unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle.
Casey was also allegedly a part of the Alabama-based white supremacist prison gang, Southern Brotherhood. He also had domestic abuse charges from 2017.
He had previously tried to break out of the prison once but his attempts were stopped early.
How did Casey escape the prison?
In 2020, after he met Vicky White, the two fell in love and continued an affair for two years. This must have been the time when they decided to escape the prison and live happily ever after. After suspiciously selling off her property for a very cheap price, Vicky announced her retirement from the prison.
On April 29, 2022, she took Casey White out on the pretext of having his mental health assessed at the court and ran away with him. While no one suspected Vicky immediately, thanks to her clean record and dedication over the years, alarm bells rang when the authorities realized that there was no court appointment that day.
What followed was an 11-day-long chase that culminated in Vicky White's death.
How was Casey White caught?
Following his escape with Vicky, the two were constantly chased by the police as they tried to escape the law. With several tips, the police remained on their heels and ultimately cornered them on May 9, 2022. In the ensuing police pursuit, Vicky and Casey's car crashed, resulting in the former's death.
The police dragged out an injured Casey and found Vicky with a gunshot wound to the back of her head. It was determined that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Casey was charged with causing the death of Vicky but was not charged with killing her. This was in exchange for a plea deal he took accepting charges of first-degree prison escape.
He remains incarcerated at William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Jefferson County, Alabama, where he will stay till at least 2061, which is his parole eligibility date.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run is now streaming on Netflix.
