Plot summary
In Christmas Eve in Miller's Point, four generations of the Balsano family come together for their last Christmas celebration in their ancestral home in the suburbs of Long Island. The gathering is filled with excited young children, indifferent teenagers, sparring cousins, worried mothers, emotional uncles, affectionate aunts, and sundowning grandmothers.
The home is brimming with decorations, presents, food, drinks, and the festive spirit. As family members split off into small groups, their mundane conversations form the crux of the movie without any climactic event taking place.
Amidst all the cheer, the film also offers bittersweet moments like the elderly Isabelle’s four children deciding on how best to look after her now that she needs round-the-clock care. Her daughter Kathleen struggles to get along with her teenage daughter, Emily, due to her mood swings, while her husband Lenny tries his best to fit in during the celebration.
Elsewhere, the adorable Uncle Ray has been secretly writing a novel and hands his nephew a few pages to read. At the end of the night, the firefighter cousin Bruce rides a festively-decorated truck, as part of the town's annual tradition, to the sound of loud cheers from his family members.
Meanwhile, the teen cousins Emily and Frankie step out on their own to meet friends for a night of fun. Michael Cera and Glenn Turkington play the cops Sgt. Brooks and Officer Gibson respectively in the film. They patrol the streets looking for speeders, but conveniently miss Emily, Frankie, and their friends as they race down the streets on a cold, wintry night.
