Christmas with the Kranks is a 2004 Christmas movie directed by Joe Roth and written by Chris Columbus, based on John Grisham's 2001 novel Skipping Christmas. The story takes place in Riverside, Illinois, where Luther and Nora Krank, an elderly couple, decide to skip Christmas after their daughter Blair leaves for Peru. However, their plans are disrupted when Blair unexpectedly returns.
Garreth Stover, the production designer intended to create the neighborhood of Hemlock Street, in Riverside. Most parts of Christmas with the Kranks were shot in the backlot of three studios located in California. The primary location was a former aircraft factory in the city of Downey, California.

2) Downey Studios, Downey, California
Joe Roth read an advance copy of John Grisham's Skipping Christmas before its release. Production designer Garreth Stover, along with a large team, spent 12 weeks building the largest exterior movie set in history, spanning 700 feet and featuring 16 houses, including those of the Kranks, Scheels, Beckers, Trogdons, and Frohmeyers.
The set was later used for other films, TV shows, and commercials. In 2012, it was demolished to make way for a new mall due to financial and environmental issues.
