Edge of Tomorrow is a 2014 science fiction movie directed by Doug Liman, with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt playing the leading roles. The script is an adaptation of a Japanese novel, All You Need Is Kill, created by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It is a film set in near-future Earth, where the whole of humanity is under attack by an advanced race of aliens.
In the film, Cruise plays Major William Cage, a public relations officer, who is flung onto the battlefield to fight the alien invaders. Killed in action, Cage inexplicably finds himself transported back in time. Now, Cage must relive the same brutal combat over and over. With the help of battle-hardened warrior Rita Vrataski, he hones his combat skills and seeks to change the course of the war.
The movie was a box office success, and reviews were positive owing to the fresh idea, action, and Cruise and Blunt performance. Since it falls into the genre combination of sci-fi, action, and time-loop narrative, Edge of Tomorrow trends on Netflix, where it streams.
Filming Locations of Edge of Tomorrow
The scope of Edge of Tomorrow was fairly big, and to stage such a future war on screen had not only different striking filming locations but iconic ones too. Be it iconic landmarks across London to huge custom-built sets, here is a list of major filming spots resorted to by this visually dynamic film.
Leavesden Film Studios, Hertfordshire
Edge of Tomorrow was the first film to shoot at the newly refurbished Leavesden Film Studios after its transformation by Warner Bros. A lot of the shooting for this movie took place herein, where nearly 50 sets were constructed, including a replica of the 'Heathrow Airport,' as well as the 'Louvre' and 'Place de la Concorde' for the Parisian battle sequences.
Even the 'Normandy' beach where some of the most important battle scenes in the film take place was very intricately replicated on the studio backlot, with 1,300 tons of sand along with an enormous green screen for CGI-enhanced backgrounds.
Trafalgar Square, London
One of the most memorable sequences features Tom Cruise's character, Major Cage, as he is flown into London in a helicopter and lands at Trafalgar Square. The scene was special, as permission to film in such a prestigious location is seldom granted, and one or even both of the famous fountains in the Square was/were switched off during shooting. The dramatic landing in this most congested area of London was shot by several cameras placed at appropriate angles from each other.
Ministry of Defence, Horseguards Avenue, London
Edge of Tomorrow utilized the actual Ministry of Defence building on Horseguards Avenue, which was used to show the 'United Defense Force Headquarters' where Cage is briefed by General Brigham, played by Brendan Gleeson. The monumental doors of the building were digitally changed for the film and this location was also used for the James Bond movie No Time To Die.
Heathrow Airport, London
When Major Cage is assigned to the battlefield, the real Heathrow Airport serves as the airfield for his deployment. Although heavily enhanced with CGI to give it a more military feel, the famous airport’s recognizable layout is visible in the film.

Barton Stacey Army Base, Hampshire
The army base seen in the film was shot at Barton Stacey, a disused military facility near Andover, Hampshire. This location doubled as the military encampment where Cage prepares for battle, with additional enhancements added through CGI to create a futuristic look.
Saunton Sands, Devon
Although much of the Normandy beach scenes were filmed on the Leavesden backlot, some of the wider shots were captured at Saunton Sands in Devon. This expansive beach had previously been used in other films, such as A Matter Of Life And Death and Pink Floyd: The Wall, lending it a cinematic history fitting for the intense battle scenes in Edge of Tomorrow.
Coach and Horses Pub, Clerkenwell, London
In a break from the action, Cage stops at a pub after biking through central London. This scene was filmed at the Coach and Horses, a traditional pub in Clerkenwell. After a confrontation with a local patron, Cage rushes outside only to witness the alien invasion from Waterloo Bridge, blending the film’s sci-fi elements with the historic London setting.
Edge of Tomorrow is streaming on Netflix in all regions.
