The much-awaited 2024 American comedy Jackpot has made its debut on Prime Video. Directed by Paul Feig and written by Rob Yescombe, the comedy stars Awkwafina, John Cena and Simu Liu among others.

Set in futuristic California, in 2030, the movie follows a struggling actor Katie who's trying to make it in a competitive acting industry. However, her life takes a surprising turn when she wins the Grand Lottery, which brings her instant fame and money.

However, there's a dangerous twist to it. Anyone with a losing ticket can claim her prize by killing her before sundown. Katie enlists the help of Noel, an amateur lottery protection agent, to protect herself and her prize.

However, there's another protection agent, Louis Lewis, who competes with Noel to protect Katie with the intention of claiming a big share of her jackpot as his commission.

Where is the American comedy Jackpot filmed?

Jackpot began filming in March 2023 and wrapped up in late April 2023, within just two months. The film started production under the working title Grand Death Lotto, and the filming mainly happened in Atlanta, Georgia, despite being set in a futuristic California.

The versatile landscape and setup the city offers were of assistance to the director and the crew in creating the appearance of California in 2030. Most of the outdoor scenes were filmed on location in Atlanta’s various streets and neighborhoods. The indoor scenes were most likely shot on a soundstage in one of the city’s film studios.

After wrapping up production, Awkwafina, who plays the lead role of Katie, shared on social media expressing her excitement about Jackpot:

“And it’s a wrap on @granddeathlotto!!! Huge thanks to our amazing cast and crew, led by the great @awkwafina and @johncena. It was such a fun shoot. And much love to Atlanta for being our home. I had the best time ever!!! Get ready for the Grand Lottery!!!”

John Cena, who plays Noel, told Screen Rant about the production process:

“It was a fast process. The shoot was fast, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, because we fell into a rhythm and routine rather quickly. Awkwafina’s style of comedy is fantastic, and I think the script played to those strengths.
"And, likewise, it allowed me to create a more patient buffer to kind of use my strengths. So, right away, we were able to set an environment where we were comfortable with each other being ourselves. And I think that’s important.”

Atlanta is a popular filming location that has seen the making of innumerable projects like Harold and the Purple Crayon, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Stranger Things.

About Jackpot: What do we know about the movie?

For director Paul Feig, Jackpot is “the Lost Jackie Chan movie." Fig views his latest movie as an ode to the works of the famous Hong Kong actor and martial artist.

According to Fig, Chan's characters are classically ones who didn't want to be in the situation and who find themselves in over their head and trying to get out of it not by being aggressive but still fighting their way out.

Amazon MGM's Jackpot also brings to us similar comic characters played by Awkwafina and John Cena who are working in a dystopian Los Angeles and trying to evade being "legally" murdered for the lottery prize.

The cast of the latest comedy movie is as follows:

  • Awkwafina as Katie
  • John Cena as Noel
  • Simu Liu as Louis Lewis
  • Ayden Mayeri as Shadi
  • Seann William Scott as Rugged Man
  • Dolly de Leon as Grandma Tala Almazan
  • Donald Elise Watkins as DJ Donald

The movie made its premiere on Prime Video today August 15, 2024.
