My Old Ass is a coming-of-age comedy drama film which first premiered on 20 January 2024 at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie released in the US theaters on September 13, 2024. It is written and directed by Megan Park (What If) and is now available to stream on Prime Video.
My Old Ass is the story of Elliott, a young girl on the brink of adulthood, and how she re-examines her relationship with her family and navigates her s*xuality, with a little input and advice from her future self.
While high on mushrooms, 18-year-old Elliot (Maisy Stella) meets a 39-year-old version of herself (Aubrey Plaza) who claims to have traveled through time. The conversation that follows makes young Elliott question most of the things in her life and gain a new perspective.
Humorous but heartwarming, My Old Ass is the story of how Elliott reconnects with her family before going to college and discovers her profound capacity to love. The movie is propelled by its gripping storytelling and the strong performances by Stella and Plaza. It also features Percy Hynes White, Maddie Ziegler, Kerrice Brooks, Maria Dizzia, Seth Isaac Johnson, and Carter Trozzolo in supporting roles.
As director Megan Park has revealed in a conversation with Filmmaker Magazine in January 20, 2024, the movie is set in the region of Muskoka Lakes in Ontario, Canada. The picturesque backdrop, containing several lakes and quaint cottages, helps set the tone for the story itself.
My Old Ass: Filming locations explored
1) Lake Joseph
The primary filming location for My Old Ass is the Sterling Point cottage, overlooking Lake Joseph. All the scenes featuring Elliot's family inside the house are filmed at this cottage.
The conversation between Elliott and her mother as well as the final scene of the movie—all have been shot here. The cottage, coupled with the lake view, provides a nostalgic and idyllic setting to the movie.
2) Port Carling
Popularly known as the "Hub of the Lakes", Port Carling is a famous tourist spot in Muskoka Lakes during summer and boasts several shopping and dining joints.
It is another major filming location in My Old Ass. This area appears in the cafe scene featuring Elliott and Chelsea, as well as during the heartfelt conversation between Elliott and Ro. The wharf pictured in the movie is also filmed at this location.
3) Johnston's Cranberry Marsh
My Old Ass is set in the backdrop of a cranberry farm in Ontario. Some of the scenes have been filmed at Johnston's Cranberry Marsh, a whopping 350-acre farm located in Bala - the Cranberry Capital of Ontario.
According to Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery's website, this farm boasts growing cranberries for three generations while practicing responsible farming. It is open to tourists throughout the year and offers fresh produce to those visiting.
4) MacTier and Huntsville
While most of the scenes in My Old Ass have been shot in the aforementioned places, there are a few sequences that capture the scenic MacTier and Huntsville in frame. The scenes showing natural landscapes, including the serene lakes and forests, have been filmed at this location in the Muskoka district in Ontario. This includes the moments where Elliott is guiding her boat on the lake or swimming in the outdoors.
5) Clevelands House, Minett
Clevelands House is a resort located at Minett - a township near Lake Rousseau in the Muskoka district. The Rock Golf Course is a part of the resort, where the scenes with Elliott bonding with Max, her brother, over golf, have been filmed.
The boatshed and wharf at the Clevelands House appears in the memorable scene where Elliott and Chad try to shield themselves from the pouring rain.
6) Toronto, Ontario
Very few scenes have been shot in Toronto, Ontario, as Elliott joins the University of Toronto. This journey from a quiet life to a busy and bustling one reflects her inner transition from an inexperienced child to someone open to exploring all the possibilities that life has to offer.
