New Asgard filming location explored
The charming fishing village of St Abbs is on Scotland’s southeast coast. The picturesque coastal landscape may have seemed ideal for the fictional Asgardian village, making it the directors' choice.
It takes only about an hour to drive to St Abbs from Edinburgh. Cliffs and the picturesque harbor are the reasons why the place is famous. In the movie, Asgardians had built their new abode in the village, which signified a fresh start, a quieter life.
What happened to the old Asgard?
Asgard is the kingdom where Thor originally hails from. The formerly magnificent nation was ruled by Nine Realms and was well known for its extravagant palaces and advanced civilization. The Asgardian gods faced a disastrous end after a string of unfortunate incidents led to Asgard's destruction.
In Thor: Ragnarok (2017), the end of Asgard was revealed to be marked by the prophecy of Ragnarok. In the movie, Hela, the Goddess of Death, had returned from exile to conquer Asgard. Thor and Loki, who are also Hela's brothers, realized that the only way to defeat Hela was to fulfill Ragnarok's prophecy. So, in a strategic move, they unleashed the fire demon Surtur who not only destroyed Asgard, but also killed Hela.
The Asgardians led by Thor, fleed and sought a new home. However, their refugee ship was attacked by Thanos and the Black Order. It caused further casualties and posed new hardships for the Asgardian people.
The Asgardians who survived the wreckage and slaughter, established New Asgard on Earth. They found their town in the little Norwegian fishing village of St. Abbs, where they built up their lives anew. The execution and presentation of the town in the film, made it seem realistic.
The destruction of the old Asgard symbolized the end of an era for the Asgardians, while opening a new path for growth and renewal, as seen in Avengers: Endgame.
