Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012) promises awe-inspiring grandeur and stunning visuals, so, unsurprisingly, the quasi-prequel to Alien earned an Oscar nod for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

The movie follows a group of scientists traversing the cosmos to visit a plant, LV-223, to find clues about humanity's forerunners, the "Engineers". Once there, they discover a series of awe-inspiring structures and dark secrets of the ancient mystery that could be detrimental to humanity.

Its eye-catching alien landscapes make it an incredibly watchable movie even after over 10 years, especially with the latest installment, Alien: Romulus, out in cinemas now. While most of the film was shot in Pinewood Studios in England, it also brought the production to breathtaking backdrops around the world, much like the exploration that happened in the film.

Where was Prometheus filmed?

Pinewood Studious, London

The Pinewood Studios in London was the main home for the production of Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic. It's been the go-to filming location for some of Scott's previous movies, including the OG Alien movie.

The film used several facilities at Pinewood for various scenes, including the famous 007 Stage. The space was created for the 1976 Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me and has been used as the Louvre gallery in The Davinci Code, the fountain of youth in Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. They also filmed in the open area of the North Lot just behind the 007 stage, which has been used by productions for Cinderella and Maleficent.

Other Pinewood facilities used are the:

  • C Stage
  • H Stage
  • J Stage
  • L Stage
  • M Stage
  • R Stage
  • S Stage

Iceland

Besides the Pinewood Studios location, Iceland also served as a scenic backdrop for most of the scenes in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, especially the outdoor scenes. Two Iceland filming locations, in particular, are unmistakable in the movie. There is the Dettifoss Waterfall, a breathtaking waterfall in the Vatnajokull National Park. The waterfall, aka Iceland and Europe's most powerful cascading water, was featured in the film's opening scene.

The other one is Mount Hekla. It's an active volcano located in the south of the country. The cast and crew filmed at the base of the giant snowcapped volcano, which is made up of rolling black lava fields. It served as a uniquely contrasting and dramatic scenery of the alien world in Prometheus.

A fun fact about the movie filming in Mount Hekla, there was gossip that the volcano near the location might erupt during the shoot. One of the film's executive producers, Mark Huffam, told Entertainment Weekly in 2012:

"We actually have an Icelandic crew on volcano watch. There were rumors that it was going to blow when we first got here."

He also said that the guy they had watching over the volcano was named Thor.

Scotland

The production for Prometheus was also filmed in Scotland. Specifically, they filmed at the Old Man of Storr in Portree. The scene in question is when Elizabeth (played by Noomi Rapace) and Charlie (played by Logan Marshall-Green) go into a mysterious cavern for the star map.

Jordan

Prometheus also featured the sandstone and granite-carved valley of the Wadi Rum Village in southern Jordan. For those who have seen the movie, the Jordan location served as the formation that looks like a grand pyramid where the spaceship arrived and touched down on the alien planet.

Watch Prometheus now streaming on Hulu, with the latest installment in the franchise, Alien: Romulus now in movie theaters.
