The Killer, the much-awaited John Woo's remake of his 1989 action film has finally hit the screens. On August 23, 2024, the movie was made available to the audiences for streaming on Peacock.

John Woo's The Killer (1989), starring Chow Yun-fat and Danny Lee, had the setting in Hong Kong, taking the viewers through a journey into the crime underworld.

The new remake, written by American writers Josh Campbell, Brian Helgeland, and Matt Stuecken makes a cultural shift, taking the movie to the city of love, Paris. John Woo reinterpreted the characters, with completely different ethnicities including American, English, French, and Irish origins.

The Killer is exclusively available for streaming on Peacock. However, one should not confuse it with David Fincher's The Killer, which is available for streaming on Netflix. Sadly, John Woo's 1989 classic is not available for streaming anywhere. However, one can buy the DVD from Amazon.

In the 1989 story of The Killer, Chow plays the role of a contract assassin who decides who decides to go against his job, and protect a young singer, when he blinds her accidentally during one of his missions.

Similarly, in the new remake Nathalie Emmanuel plays the role of Zee, an assassin, who decides to protect a singer named Jenn, from the crime mafia, and in that process friends a cop named Sey.

The Killer is available to stream on Peacock

A collaborative production of Universal Pictures, The Killer is a Peacock original and is exclusively available for streaming on Peacock. The platform owns its distribution rights and until now no other streaming platforms have bought the movie.

Peacock's OTT service platform offers the audiences an array of diverse content including movies, sports, and TV shows. At the current time, Peacock offers two types of subscriptions for the audience.

The Peacock Premium costs $7.99/month or $79.99/year and provides access to almost all the content on the platform, across more than fifty channels. However, its content will still have ads, including Peacock channels, events, and TV shows and movies.

What is the story of The Killer?

The Killer narrates the story of Zee, a professional assassin who is appointed by an Irishman named Finn to eliminate their business rival. The Killer is set in the city of Paris, where Zee works as a hitman under the drug lord Jules Gobert, and is supposed to be ruthless in her missions.

She is a well-known figure in the crime underworld and is known as The Queen of the Dead, for her ways in killing the targets. She is appointed on another mission to attack members of a rival gang from Marseille, while they are unaware in a club.

Zee succeeds in completing her mission, mercilessly killing each of its members, but in between that process, she hurts an innocent civilian. A young singer named Jenn Clark is bluntly hit on the back of her head while falling on the ground, which makes her go blind.

She is admitted to the hospital, but both Finn and Zee know they must kill her as they can't leave any trace alive. This sends Zee into a big dilemma, where she must decide whether to do her job and stay loyal to the gang, or follow her human emotions and save an innocent young girl.

Meanwhile, a local Cop named Sey, while investigating Zee's boyfriend Coco discovers about her, and all the murders she committed. Soon Zee finds herself on a constant run, where she must protect Jenn and herself not just from the police but also from the past that she had left.

The cast of The Killer includes Nathalie Emmanuel as Zee, Omar Sy as Sey, Dianna Silvers as Jenn Clark, Sam Worthington as Finn, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Eric Cantona. Woo skilfully reinterprets his original film, but this time with a leading female protagonist.
