When The Christmas Chronicles debuted on Netflix in 2018, it immediately became a huge hit and remains a fan favorite even six years later. The cast is led by Kurt Russel, who plays the main character of Santa, while Darby Camp plays Kate, and Judah Lewis is her brother, Lowell.

The plot follows how the two siblings embark on a mission to see Santa. However, when a crisis occurs, they find themselves in Santa's sleigh and the trio gets stranded in Chicago. Now, the siblings have to join hands with Santa and save Christmas.

The Christmas Chronicles takes viewers on a scenic journey through a host of cities that feature as backdrops. However, the primary filming location of the movie was Toronto, a perfectly snowy winter destination that aptly served as the backdrop for the Christmas movie.

Filming locations for The Christmas Chronicles explored

The major filming locations for The Christmas Chronicles are explored below.

1. Toronto, Canada

Most of the shooting and production process of The Christmas Chronicles was done in Pinewood Studios, Toronto. However, a lot of scenes were also shot outside and locals from the area would be able to recognise some of the places the scenes were shot in.

In fact, in 2018, residents of the city shared on Twitter sightings of Kurt Russel dressed in a long red jacket and sporting a fluffy white beard, according to Toronto’s blogTO. He was also spotted riding on the roof of a sports car during the shooting. Some familiar scenes shot here were the sleigh crashes and footage of Kate and Lowell’s home in the 6ix.

Toronto is the perfect place to bring to life the image of a winter wonderland during Christmas. Some of the locations in Toronto that were used for shooting are the residential neighborhoods of Leslieville, The Windsor Arms hotel, and a pub called St. James’s Gate.

2. Chicago, Illinois

To create the image of a winter wonderland covered in white, aerial shots of Chicago, Illinois were used as a backdrop for The Christmas Chronicles. There are many winter attractions in this place. The city's Christmas Tree is decorated and erected during the season in Millenium Park annually and visitors can also ice skate in the area, or at Maggie Daley Park during this time.

Is there a sequel to The Christmas Chronicles?

Yes, the first part was so popular that Netflix released a sequel to the movie in 2020. The second part saw Russel return as Santa Claus, along with Goldie Hawn, his real-life partner, who played Mrs. Claus. In the second film, which is set two years after the events of the first one, we see Kate Pierce, who has grown up to become a cynical teen, unexpectedly reunite with Santa Claus to save Christmas once again when a mysterious troublemaker threatens to cancel Christmas forever.

Another major filming location we saw in the sequel movie was the Fairmont Mayakoba Riviera Maya, a luxury resort surrounded by tropical forest, clear lagoons, and white-sand beaches. The Pierce Family stayed there listening to Christmas carols played by mariachi here. Fairmont Mayakoba Riviera Maya is a car-free complex that is accessible only by boat or on foot or bicycle. It is located just outside of Playa del Carmen, which is 30 minutes away from Cancun.
