The Watchers is a supernatural horror film which released on 7th June, 2024. It is the directorial debut of M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan. The movie, based on A. M. Shine's novel of the same name has grossed around $50 million worldwide and has not received the best of reviews as well.
The official official synopsis of the film reads:
“A young artist gets stranded in an extensive, immaculate forest in western Ireland, where, after finding shelter, she becomes trapped alongside three strangers, stalked by mysterious creatures each night.”
The Watchers stars actors such as Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré, and Oliver Finnegan. It revolves around a 28-year-old artist who finds herself stranded in a Western Ireland forest, where she goes in search of her missing husband.
The film features some truly picturesque shots and locations, the principal photography for which took place in three cities in Ireland- Dublin, Wicklow, and Galway. The filming began in the summer of 2023 and was completed by September of that year.
The Watchers' primary filming locations: Wicklow, Dublin, and more
1) Dublin, Ireland
The primary location when it came to the shooting of The Watchers was Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. The movie featured a range of marketplaces, historic buildings, and parks around Dublin and perfectly captured the vibrant culture and atmosphere of the city.
Of course, the city also featured majorly in the initial parts of the film as Mina makes her journey deeper into Ireland, and therefore did not play host to most of the jumpscares that were featured in The Watchers. Still, the natural beauty of the city was on full display with respect to The Watchers.
2) Wicklow, Ireland
The second major location that was featured in The Watchers is Wicklow, which is often referred to as the Garden of Ireland. The city features a range of picturesque locations, lush green parks and forests, and plenty of isolated stretches of greenery that gave the creators the almost perfect location to shoot some of the movie’s more sinister scenes.
Wicklow's beauty was also on full display in The Watchers, as the sheer expanse of the forests featured in the movie gave The Watchers an eerie feel and atmosphere.
3) Galway, Ireland
Finally, the third major location that can be seen in The Watchers is the coastal city of Galway. The city is famous for its traditional pubs that play Irish folk music. Some of the filming locations in Galway were Quay Street, Kirwan's Lane, and Cross Street.
In addition to it, the film also features the city’s lush, untouched forests, and its rocky and rugged coastline in a variety of scenes.
The region acted as the perfect setting for the sinister nature of The Watchers, considering the kind of untouched natural beauty that it boasts of. Hence, The Watchers in itself was dominantly shot in Ireland, with a majority of the movie set in the above three cities.
Apart from the above, there is limited information available about the kind of shooting locations that were used in The Watchers. The movie itself had been under production for a considerable time and was initially self-financed by M. Night Shyamalan.
It was eventually sold to Warner Bros. for $30 million and has made a profit of a mere $20 million, with respect to its overall earnings. Not only has the film suffered from poor box office returns, but the movie has also received poor reviews from fans and critics. The Watchers unfortunately could only muster a 5.7 IMDB rating and a 32% Tomatometer score along with a 52% Audience Score.
