M. Night Shyamalan's new thriller, Trap, is tugging at audiences with its intrigue, suspenseful storyline and diversified filming locations. What was supposed to be the first take in Cincinnati, Ohio, changed with the 2023 SAGAFTRA strike, which sent the whole crew off to Canada.

The film's sparkling visuals and tension-laden atmosphere are credited to ingeniously chosen locations spread across Ontario. Here's a deeper look into where Trap was filmed and how the settings of the place contributed to the atmosphere in this film.

All filming locations of Trap

1) Mississauga, Ontario

One of the busiest cities adjacent to Toronto, Mississauga had a large role in Trap. Famous for its modern sky scenery and sights like the iconic Absolute World Towers, Mississauga provided plenty of picture-perfect backdrops for some very pivotal scenes.

The movie has a mix of both residential and commercial areas that do pretty well in portraying the image of a city. The diverse landscape of the city helped lent characters a lot of energy.

2) Hamilton, Ontario

Another key location for Trap was Hamilton, with its industrial feel and picture-postcard vistas. A little bit of old mills and factories in the city elided with its waterfront views to give it that gritty, atmospheric feel needed for the movie.

Notably, the film made use of sites like the Hamilton Port Authority and the historic Dundurn Castle to fuel the film's eerie and suspenseful tone. Hamilton's throbbing arts community also played into its creation through local artists who were in the field of set design and props.

3) Toronto, Ontario

The movie was also shot in Toronto, Canada's biggest city. The myriad of architecture from historical to ultra-modern skyscrapers presented various scenes with versatile settings.

A multipurpose stadium, the Rogers Centre, underwent a makeover for one of the important plot locations. Some of the busy streets of Downtown Toronto added dynamism and intensity to the movie. Cultural and architectural variety enriched the visual storytelling.

Production challenge and relocation

The relocation from Cincinnati to Canada presented both challenges and opportunities to the production team.

It's always tough to adapt to new locations and change logistics at the same time, but Canadian cities offered plenty of unique settings that helped raise the aesthetic value of the film.

The movie gives a feel of the distinct characteristic features of Ontario's urban and industrial environments, as it meant to evoke the feeling of suspense and immersion.

Involvement of locals and its impact

Filming for the movie greatly influenced the local communities there in Ontario. Many residents and business owners were directly involved with the production as extras, crew members and service providers.

All that helped boost the local economy and made the people of the communities excited and proud.

The fact that the film was shot there proved to a large extent that such cities could also prove to be potential shooting locations in the future.

Locations selected by M. Night Shyamalan for Trap exude his unique style and commitment to atmospheric storytelling.

Ontario's diverse settings allowed him to create a film that would be at once stunning and deeply immersive, due to his attention to detail and how he could use each location to bring in suspense and intrigue.

In other words, the locations of the filming, Mississauga, Hamilton and Toronto, shaped both the atmosphere and narrative of Trap. Relocation to Canada opened other opportunities for creative storytelling and increased the visuals and emotional impact of the film.

A diversity of settings in the film underpin Ontario as having huge potential as one of the prime destinations for future cinematic projects.
