Russell Crowe stars as an unhinged villain in the road rage thriller Unhinged, which dropped on Netflix on October 14. First released in movie theaters in 2020, it received a subpar rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics with only a 48% score. However, the psychological thriller has since jumped to the top of the US Netflix charts on October 17 and 18, per Flix Patrol, and is currently sitting at #2, just behind the newly released Woman of the Hour.

The movie is a classic cat-and-mouse road rage thriller featuring Crowe as Tom Cooper, who loses his temper while driving at an intersection. After a confrontation with an impatient driver, a single mother named Rachel, he becomes fixated on teaching her a lesson for being rude to him. As Cooper's mental state worsens as the movie progresses, his revenge takes a much darker turn, becoming Rachel's worst nightmare.

Caren Pistorius and Gabriel Bateman join Crowe in the cast of the Derrick Borte-directed film. Unhinged is set in New Orleans, aka Crescent City, and the city also served as the primary filming location for the movie. The movie also shot scenes in other places around New Orleans.

Unhinged was mostly filmed in New Orleans

New Orleans served as the central backdrop of Unhinged, with the production filming in many of the iconic places in the city. One of the notable locations and landmarks that made it into the film is the Crescent City Connection Bridge. It's where Russell Crowe's Tom Cooper first met Pistorius's Rachel, who was driving a beat-up Volvo. The iconic twin bridges sitting over the Mississippi River are also where they filmed the epic car chase between the two characters.

The Crescent City Connection Bridge is one of the busiest crossings in the country, and shutting down the area for filming is impossible as it could shut down the entire downtown area. Unhinged's location manager, F. Stanley Pearse shared how they made it work in a July 2019 Nola article, saying:

"Shutting down the entire bridge to the west bank for daytime shoots was impossible...but we were able to obtain the use of the HOV lane."

Hayne Boulevard in New Orleans also served as a shooting location for the film's highway scenes. Another location that showed up prominently in the psychological thriller is the Ursuline Academy. It was where they filmed the school where Rachel's son, Kyle, is studying, aka the fictitious Wesley Oaks Elementary School.

What are other Unhinged filming locations in Louisiana?

Besides filming all around New Orleans, the movie also shot significant scenes outside of the city. However, the production has kept the filming in places in Louisiana.

Kenner

The suburban city of Kenner was also a key filming location for Russell Crowe's movie. There was a restaurant called Darrow's Diner in the movie, where Tom planned to meet Rachel, only to meet Rachel's friend Andy. In real life, they filmed the scene in a diner called Franny's Place Family.

Per Nola, the movie also shot scenes in other Kenner locations, including a home in Chateau Boulevard and Chateau Estates. There was also a scene where the front door of a house was blown over. It was filmed in a house in Woodlake Estates in Kenner.

Jefferson Parish

The traffic light scene in Russell Crowe's Unhinged, where Tom catches up to Rachel after she speeds up ahead of him, was shot on Edwards Avenue in Elmwood. It was a crucial scene that formed the plot of the movie. Elmwood is a suburb located in the Jefferson Parish county in Louisiana.
