Jailbreak: Love on the Run is a recent documentary film released on Netflix on September 25, 2024. In under one and a half hours, the documentary reconstructs the prison break of Casey Cole White by using ample archival footage and interviews. It also sheds light on the role of Vicky White in the escape.
The synopsis of the documentary reads:
“In this gripping documentary, an Alabama corrections officer falls in love with a man awaiting trial for murder and risks it all to help him escape.”
Vicky White was the assistant director of corrections at the Lauderdale County Detention Center, Alabama, for 17 years. There she met Casey White, a convicted felon who was serving time, and fell in love with him. On April 29, 2022, Vicky helped Casey escape the facility.
The two tried to evade the police. Eventually, after an 11-day manhunt, they were caught. Vicky White died of a self-inflicted gunshot. Casey, on the other hand, is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run: Vicky White shot herself dead
On April 29, 2022, Vicky took Casey Cole White out of the Lauderdale County Jail, telling the supervisors that she was taking him to a "mental health evaluation” session. No such appointment really existed.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run shows in detail how minutely Vicky had prepared for Casey’s escape so that the two of them could live a happy life after that. For instance, she sold her house hastily, purchased guns and camping equipment, and put together huge amounts of cash prior to the escape.
Through an investigative gaze and making use of plenty of archival materials, Jailbreak: Love on the Run reconstructs the police procedure followed in tracking down Vicky and Casey. Vicky had purchased an orange Ford prior to the escape, which was discovered by the police seven days later in a tow yard.
After that, with the help of CCTV footage, officials tracked the truck of the couple to Evansville. Further, a trace of a Cadillac was also found, which Casey used to drive. Thus, after a prolonged manhunt, with the help of these findings, the two were found to be staying at a nearby motel.
On May 9, 2024, Vicky and Casey realized that they were being followed. As they attempted to evade the police, a car chase ensued between the two parties. The Cadillac of Vicky and Casey fell into a ditch, and its airbags went off.
Upon seeing no further chance of escape, Vicky shot herself. Casey surrendered to the police immediately and begged the authorities to “please check on my wife,” as per a report published by Time on September 25, 2024. They were, however, not officially married.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run explores the life story of Vicky White
The documentary film depicts the events leading up to Casey’s escape, helped by Vicky, and the subsequent developments following the jailbreak. It also delved into the life story of Vicky to explain what may have caused her to act the way she did.
According to the testimonies of Vicky’s colleagues as recorded in Jailbreak: Love on the Run, she was a widely respected worker, having been named "Employee of the Year" four times in her 17-year-old career.
Such was Vicky’s reputation that following Casey’s escape, it was suspected that he had coerced her into helping him. However, CCTV footage proved that Vicky helped Casey willingly. Further, her colleagues retrospectively pieced together that the escape was in Vicky’s mind for some time as her retirement day approached.
Vicky was supposed to retire on April 29, 2022, the same day Casey escaped. Vicky’s colleagues reveal in Jailbreak: Love on the Run that she told them, “When I go, I’m going out with a bang.” Further, they occasionally saw her giving out special treatments to Casey.
Her co-workers at the facility are of the opinion that though Vicky was a kind and caring woman, she was also a lonely person who took to alcohol to cope with her grief. As per a report published by Cosmopolitan on September 25, 2024, Vicky’s former husband struggled with drug addictions. Her next partner died in a car accident.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run shows how the lonely Vicky looked forward to starting a new life with Casey. Several interviewees opine in Jailbreak: Love on the Run that Casey too genuinely loved her. Former inmate Tyler Purser, for instance, says the following in the documentary:
“Don't paint it out like he's a monster. Don't paint it out like she was a fool. They were just two people [from] different walks of life that fell in love.”
Casey White will not be eligible for parole until 2081. According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, he is currently incarcerated at William E. Donaldson Correction Facility in Bessemer.
Jailbreak: Love on the Run is streaming on Netflix.
