The truth about Air McNair's death as shown in Untold: The Murder of Air McNair
On July 4, 2009, the shocking deaths of former NFL star quarterback Steve McNair and Sahel "Jenni” Kazemi were discovered in a Nashville, Tennessee condominium. Air McNair who was aged 36 was found with multiple gunshot wounds and Kazemi, 20, with a single gunshot wound to the head. The Nashville Police concluded that Kazemi had murdered McNair before committing su*cide.
The duo's bodies were found by McNair’s friend Wayne Neely who shared the condominium with McNair. Neely initially contacted Robert Gaddy another friend and former teammate of McNair who then alerted the police. The investigation quickly focused on the relationship between Air McNair and Kazemi who had been dating for several months. McNair, married and a father was found to have been involved with multiple women that complicated his personal life.
Evidence collected at the scene indicated that Air McNair was likely asleep when he was shot twice in the head and twice in the chest. Kazemi’s body was found next to his with a single gunshot wound to her head and the pistol used in the shootings under her body. The 9mm pistol was traced back to a sale by Adrian Gilliam who later admitted to selling the gun to Kazami.
The motive for the murder-suicide was closely examined, with financial and emotional distress cited as key factors. Kazemi was struggling financially and feeling overwhelmed by her relationship with Steve McNair. Text messages and conversations from the days before the deaths showed she was distraught and unstable.
Kazemi, originally from Tehran, Iran, had a troubled background. She moved to the U.S. after her mother was killed in a robbery, dropped out of high school, and later moved to Nashville, where she met McNair while working at a Dave & Buster’s restaurant.
Despite the police’s conclusion the case has been met with skepticism and alternative theories. Vincent Hill who was a private investigator and former police officer has been a vocal critic of the official account. He has published books and appeared in media outlets challenging the findings and suggesting potential oversights in the investigation particularly around the verification of Gilliam’s alibi and the handling of forensic evidence.
