Beetlejuice 2, releasing on September 6, 2024, brings back the iconic mix of Tim Burton’s elaborate set designs and real-world locations that made the original film so memorable. The sequel, just like its predecessor, blends fantasy with reality by using distinct landmarks that reflect the movie's rural American setting while also expanding to other regional and international locations.

Focused on Lydia Deetz and introducing her daughter, Astrid, this continuation of the narrative is set 36 years after the original. The movie brings new settings in addition to revisiting some of the original ones, creating a fresh but familiar backdrop for the narrative.

Filming Beetlejuice 2 at several unusual sites greatly enhances the mood and narrative of the movie. East Corinth, Vermont, stood in for the fictional town of Winter River and was the principal filming site.

This small town is featured in many of the exterior shots, including key landmarks like Miss Shannon’s School for Girls, portrayed by East Corinth’s old Masonic lodge.

However, the production also moved to Melrose, Massachusetts, to film some nighttime Halloween scenes. The shift was necessary due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, although East Corinth remained the primary setting for the movie.

Apart from these American locations, Beetlejuice 2 was also filmed extensively in England. Most of the interior scenes were shot in London studios, marking a departure from the original movie, which used Culver City Studios in California.

East Corinth, Vermont

Like in the original film, the little Vermont town of East Corinth was absolutely vital in Beetlejuice 2.

Much of the action in the movie takes place in this little, charming town, which is the fictional Winter River. The town's old Masonic lodge stood in for Miss Shannon's School for Girls, one of several East Corinth landmarks the production crew used.

While the Deetz family's house was rebuilt on a hillside overlooking the town, shop fronts were used to give the exterior views of the movie a real feel. This Gothic facade, draped in black for a post-funeral sequence, connects the sequel to the original in a visually striking way.

Melrose, Massachusetts

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Beetlejuice 2 also filmed some scenes in Melrose, Massachusetts. The SAG-AFTRA strike, which momentarily stopped filming in East Corinth, spurred the decision to relocate part of the production here.

Although the major events of the film are set in Winter River, some of the nighttime Halloween scenes in the film were shot in Melrose. Melrose is not as central to the movie as East Corinth, but it still helps to bring some scenes to life and gives the visual terrain of the film another texture.

England: London and Hitchin

Unlike the original film, which was produced in California, most of Beetlejuice 2's interior scenes were shot in London. The main reason it moved to London was the continuous strikes in 2023, which cast doubt on filming plans.

Apart from the studio work, a significant wedding sequence was shot at an abandoned boarding school in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. This site gives the film a distinctive English touch, harmonizing with the American settings and enhancing the entire aesthetic quality of the work.

Beetlejuice 2's filming sites combine American and English environments in just the right mix to accentuate the unique look and feel of the film.

East Corinth, Vermont, stays central in the movie, closely related to the original, while Melrose, Massachusetts and other English sites provide new angles that improve the story. These sites ground the fanciful narrative in reality, so transforming Beetlejuice 2 into a visual feast for both original and new viewers.

Beetlejuice 2 combines real-world locations with Tim Burton's iconic sets to feel both familiar and new. By returning to East Corinth, adding Melrose scenes and using English settings, the sequel stays true to the original while expanding.

These several filming sites give viewers a rich and immersive experience, helping bring the story to life. Whether set in rural America or historic England, every place gives the movie more realism and authenticity, ensuring that Beetlejuice 2 will be regarded as a worthy follow-up to the cherished original.
