About My Father draws from Sebastian Manisalco's real-life experiences

The film is based on Sebastian Manisalco's real-life relationship with his own father, Salvatore Manisalco. Salvatore is an Italian immigrant to the United States who moved there from Cefalu, Cicily at the age of 15. Sebastian's mother is Rose Manisalco, a secretary with blood ties to Naples and Campania, aside from Sicily itself.

Maniscalco had a Roman Catholic upbringing, and he would later explore the influence of his father in his standup comedy routines. In an interview with Dolce magazine in February 2022, Maniscalco spoke about the 20 years of experience and practice he needed to do to polish his style of observational comedy:

"You don’t become a bodybuilder the first day you start lifting weights,” he explains. “Same thing with comedy. You gotta flesh out your joke, your bit. You add and subtract. You see what works.”

Sebastian first moved to Los Angeles to pursue his comedy career in 1998. He got his start performing on open mic nights and bowling alleys and took up a job as a waiter for seven years to make ends meet. His career breakthrough occurred when he was noticed by Andrew Dice Clay, and the two went on tour together.

Following this, Sebastian was featured on Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show and became the host of the MTV Video Music Awards in 2019.

Aside from his standup comedy routines and About My Father, Sebastian has also delved into his personal life in the 2018 memoir, Stay Hungry.

About My Father also isn't his first collaboration with Robert DeNiro, as the two worked together on the Netflix crime film The Irishman. Robert DeNiro was the lead actor in that film, playing mob hitman Frank Sheeran, while Sebastian played the mobster Crazy "Joe" Gallo.

About My Father is distributed by Lionsgate Films and is available for streaming on multiple platforms.
