Blue Velvet, often widely regarded as one of David Lynch's finest works, hit US theatres on September 19, 1986. Despite its initial poor box office performance and mixed critical reception due to its handling of complex and mature themes, the neo-noir mystery thriller film has developed a strong cult following over the years.

The film often sparks conversations among cinema enthusiasts, thanks to its unconventional approach to its subject matter, which was groundbreaking for its time. Many consider it one of the greatest films of the 1980s. As a result, the filmmakers have made efforts to ensure the film is accessible to a wide audience today.

Interested viewers can currently find the movie streaming on various platforms, such as Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Fandango at Home. Additionally, it is accessible on several other platforms, which will be shared later, so stay tuned for more information.

About the movie

Blue Velvet's story starts when a young college student named Jeffrey Beaumont comes back to his ailing father, and locates a severed human ear on his way. The piece of evidence then leads him to a dangerous criminal conspiracy which leads him further into an abyss of complicated scenarios that endanger his life.

Apple TV Plus which houses the movie at present, describes it in the following way:

"If you've never taken a trip into the mind of director David Lynch, this is the place to start. At once beautiful, horrifying, erotic and surreal, this 1986 controversial masterpiece is about the evils that can exist in even the most perfect of places."

It then goes on to elaborate on the film's plot and mentions:

"When college student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) investigates a mystery in his small town, he unwittingly opens the door to an underworld of murder, sex, kidnapping and blackmail. Dennis Hopper gives one of the big screen's most unforgettable performances as Frank Booth, a twisted drug sniffing villain with (how does one put it delicately?) "mommy issues."
