Bone Tomahawk is a dark, grisly Western
Bone Tomahawk features gritty themes such as cannibalism, brutal violence, and abductions.
The story opens with two bandits, Purvis and Buddy, being attacked at a Native American burial site. Buddy dies in the attack, while Purvis manages to escape to the nearby town of Bright Hope, where he buries his stash. This gets noticed by the town's Deputy Chicory, who reports Purvis to Sheriff Franklin Hunt.
Hunt shoots Purvis in the leg when he tries to run and asks a gunslinger named John Brooder to fetch the town doctor. John instead returns with the doctor's daughter, Samantha O'Dwyer, who's been trying to care for her husband, Arthur.
Franklin Hunt leaves Purvis and Samantha under the care of his other deputy, Nick, but later that night, a stable boy gets murdered, and Hunt rushes back to his office to find Nick, Samantha, and Purvis having been abducted, with a single arrow left at the scene.
Hunt consults with The Professor, a resident Native American, about the arrow, and The Professor reveals that the tribe that attacked the town is known as the Troglodytes. They're a group of inbred cannibals whose depravity knows no bounds, and The Professor warns Hunt that they're extremely dangerous.
Hunt forms a search party along with John Brooder and Deputy Chicory to find Samantha, Purvis, and Nick. Samantha's husband, Arthur, also insists on joining despite still suffering from a leg injury.
One day, while they're making camp, they're discovered by two strangers, whom Brooder promptly kills as he fears they may have been a scouting party of raiders. They move camp, but this time they really do get ambushed by raiders, who steal all the horses, except for Brooder's, which is rendered injured.
The next day, Arthur and Brooder get into a fight, which exacerbates Arthur's injury and causes Brooder, Hunt, and Chicory to go on without him. When they reach the valley, the Troglodytes ambush them, and Brooder sacrifices himself in the ensuing battle while Hunt and Chicory get captured.
While imprisoned, the two discover Samantha and Nick, and it's revealed that Purvis has already been murdered and eaten by the Troglodytes, and they all witness Nick getting ritually slaughtered and fed on by the tribe.
Hunt manages to turn the tables on them by poisoning them with an opium-laced liquor, while Arthur makes his way to the valley.
After killing two troglodytes, Arthur discovers that they whistle to each other using an animal bone in their windpipes. He uses this trick to lure another Troglodyte and kill him.
Meanwhile, after Hunt's poisoning trick is discovered, the Troglodyte leader has his stomach cut open and the heated opium flask forced into the wound. With Arthur's help, Hunt manages to kill the Troglodyte leader.
Mortally wounded, he stays behind with a shotgun, promising to kill any remaining Troglodytes he comes across. Arthur frees Samantha and Chicory, and the three leave the cave, only to encounter two pregnant Troglodyte women who've been rendered blind with stakes and had their limbs amputated.
Once the three leave the cave, Arthur blows his Troglodyte whistle. After a while, three gunshots ring out.
Bone Tomahawk received critical acclaim upon release, with a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the performances of the actors and the refreshing storytelling.
