Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh's new tearjerker, We Live in Time, had a limited release in US cinemas on October 11, 2024, before moving to more movie theaters nationwide on October 18.
The new A24 feature tells the evolving love story of Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh), which started when she ran him over with her car. Viewers get to see them quickly fall in love with each other and live a life together for over a decade. Along the way, they embrace beautiful relationship milestones but also plenty of life's hurdles, including cancer.
The film tells Tobias and Almut's love story in non-chronological order and is set in a backdrop of England's cityscape and the countryside. We Live in Time was shot in the Herne Hill neighborhood in the Greater London area and England's Surrey County.
John Crowley, whose credits include The Goldfinch and Brooklyn, directed the film, with Nick Payne, who was behind the screenplay of The Last Letter from Your Lover, writing the script. Grace Delaney, Lee Braithwaite, Aoife Hinds, Niamh Cusack, and others join Garfield and Pugh in the We Live in Time cast list.
We Live in Time was filmed in England
England lends a varied backdrop for Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh's decades of romance in We Live in Time. The production was shot in less touristy neighborhoods in London and the British countryside, including where Garfield grew up.
Herne Hill neighborhood in London, England
While the movie is told in an unchronological order, Tobias and Almut's story starts in London, where they live and first meet. The film chose the Herne Hill neighborhood as the backdrop for their blossoming romance. It's a leafy London suburb located between Brixton and Dulwich. It's often referred to as the slide of countryside in the Greater London area, which is famous for its good selection of shops, cafes, local pubs, and a bustling village feel.
As per the interior decorating magazine House Beautiful, in a press brief, Crowley explained why they chose Herne Hill as a location:
"We set the story in Herne specifically because it's not especially glamorous. That felt important because we thought it would feel true to audiences and at the same time break out of the romantic genre's usual conventions."
Several of Herne Hill's notable landmarks made it into We Live in Time. There was the Herne Hill station, where Tobias can be seen exiting in one of the scenes in the film during his date night with Almut. There was also the famous Brockwell Park, in the south of Brixton, around the Herne Hill neighborhood. Tobias and Almut can be seen walking around the park's open meadows the day after their date night.
Surrey county in England
Tobias and Almut may be living it up in the mellow neighborhood of Herne Hill early in their relationship in We Live in Time, but as their romance progresses, they leave the city for a life in the British countryside. This timeline of the film was filmed in Surrey County, England.
Andrew Garfield grew up in this ceremonial county in South East England, known for its abundance of rolling hills, valleys, gardens, and waterways. In the brief, Garfield described this location, saying:
"I love that this is not a tourist's Britain that you're seeing in the film. It's an unglamorous Britain where two people, a couple you might pass on the street without any thought, are having this extraordinary thing happen in their lives."
The countryside house where Tobias and Almut live later in their life is a property in Hascombe, a village in the Surrey Hills area known for its historic buildings, charming community, and picturesque natural beauty.
Catch A24's We Live in Time in movie theaters nationwide. So far, a streaming release date for the movie has not been announced.
