Young Woman and the Sea is a 2024 biographical film based on the journey of Gertrude Caroline Ederle. Ederle was the first woman to swim across the English Channel in a record time of 14 hours and 31 minutes. She was called the "Queen of Waves" for her skill to swim along the tides, not against the tides.

The movie, directed by Joachim Ronning, is adapted from the book of the same name by Glenn Stout. It stars Daisy Ridley as Trudy Ederle and was first released on May 31, 2024. Subsequently, it became available for streaming on Disney+ starting July 19, 2024.

Young Woman and the Sea follows the journey of Ederle from her childhood until she became a swimming coach. Hence, the makers traveled through real locations to make it realistic, instead of green screens, to film the movie. The movie was filmed in four different countries across the water, including Bulgaria, France, New York, and England.

The locations where Young Woman and the Sea were filmed

1) Kavarna, Bulgaria

Kavarna is a town in Bulgaria, situated on the coast of the Black Sea. Most of the crucial swimming scenes in Young Woman and the Sea were shot in Kavarna. In an interview with Deadline published on May 19, 2024, Daisy Ridley discussed the challenges she faced while shooting in the Black Sea for nine days.

In the same interview, director Joachim Ronning explained why he wanted to shoot in the real waters and not in a tank with green screens all over. He believed that the struggles and challenges the actor faced during the shooting in the Black Sea added authenticity and made the movie come alive.

2) New York City, New York

Some of the scenes in the movie are shot in New York City, also known as the Big Apple, as it was the hometown of Trudy Ederle. The locations display Trudy’s childhood and her journey to becoming a world record holder.

New York City is well known for its hustling and bustling streets. The city offers the right set of production facilities and locations, like Times Square and Central Park, which resonate well with the audience.

3) Paris, France

As the movie is defined as drama/romance, Young Woman and the Sea featured scenes shot in Paris, highlighting the beauty and historical architecture, which adds to the movie's plot. The movie showed Trudy’s adulthood in France when she failed to cross the English Channel on her first attempt. He then changed her coach and got trained in Paris.

Paris, the largest and capital city of France, is also known as the City of Light and Love. Its ambiance and beautiful architecture, including landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, serve as a visual aid in a movie filled with challenges and determination.

4) Iver, England

Iver is a peaceful village in Buckinghamshire, England, with several facilities in terms of residential options. Many scenes of Young Woman and the Sea were shot at the Pinewood Studios, located in Iver. The studio provides a perfect stage to shoot scenes in water and also on the ground.

The studio has over 30 stages designed for different purposes and themes required in the shooting of a film. It also has an underwater stage, which is considered to be one of the largest in the EU. Pinewood Studios in Iver has witnessed the production of Batman Returns (1992) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007).
