The Deadpool & Wolverine film, an R-rated action-comedy, has become a box office success after its release. This film is known for its sharp humor and jokes about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), actors' personal lives, and taboo subjects. However, reportedly one joke from the film had to be cut before its final release.

This specific line was aimed at the Disney organization that now runs the Deadpool franchise after taking over 20th Century Fox. A joke referring to Mickey Mouse was deemed too harsh and therefore edited out by Disney.

The controversial joke that wasn't included in Deadpool & Wolverine

The original joke from Deadpool & Wolverine which was included in the official script made available on Disney's FYC portal, had Deadpool exclaiming:

“F*CK! What we can’t even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse c*ck in my throat.”

This line was a jab at Disney's corporate influence over the franchise as Deadpool breaks the fourth wall and expresses his frustration over the studio's financial capabilities.

According to Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, Disney had some specific concerns with this line because of its explicit nature. This was during his press tour when he said that the company gave him feedback on certain jokes but was generally very flexible.

Notably, Reynolds discussed this in an interview published on Entertainment Weekly's website on July 12, 2024. The result was that the joke did not make it into the final version of the movie.

A new "dirty" line instead of the original in Deadpool & Wolverine

Director Shawn Levy elaborated on the joke's deletion in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on July 15, 2024. He said the scene was replaced with another edgy joke featuring Pinocchio, fitting with Deadpool's signature irreverence. The new line was:

“Pinocchio shoving his face up Deadpool’s a*s and starting to lie like crazy.”

Reynolds's ability to deliver such provocative humor became a signature feature of the Deadpool films, and this replacement line is an example of the team staying true to the character's voice.

According to reports gathered from numerous interviews, the initial feelings of disappointment soon changed and they respected what Disney was doing. During his promotional tour, Reynolds remarked:

"It's Deadpool. You push, but sometimes you hit a wall. Disney let us get away with a lot, though".

Disney's influence on Deadpool and the X-Men universe

The involvement of Disney in Deadpool & Wolverine came after the company acquired 20th Century Fox, which included the rights to the X-Men franchise. For years, Deadpool had been under the Fox umbrella, known for its R-rated content and unfiltered humor.

However, after the acquisition, the future of Deadpool within the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) became a topic of speculation. Disney has always made family-friendly content but with much censorship or moderation of adult content.

With Deadpool's popularity and its crass brand of humor, Disney allowed the character to keep his R-rated nature. At the same time, there had to be some lines drawn. The removal of the joke about Mickey Mouse reflected Disney's cautious approach to maintaining a balance between honoring the tone of the film and protecting the image of the company.

Deadpool & Wolverine brought fans the trademark mix of comic book and action that the franchise prides itself on, but one joke attacking Disney's corporate culture remained on the cutting room floor.

Despite the cut, Deadpool & Wolverine kept its edgy humor. The deleted Mickey Mouse joke for the Deadpool fans serves as a reminder of how the franchise has always pushed the boundaries of humor and will probably keep doing the same, even as it evolves the characters under Disney's watch.
