Hollywood has announced the nominations for the Oscars 2025. Leading this year’s Academy Award nominations is Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, with 13 nominations. This Spanish-language, French-produced musical breaks the record for the most Oscar nominations earned by a film not in the English language.
Trailing closely are The Brutalist and Wicked, each securing 10 nominations. The announcement of the nominees was delayed twice due to fires in the Los Angeles area, originally scheduled for last week.
Starring Karla Sofía Gascón as Emilia Pérez, Zoe Saldana as Rita, and Selena Gomez as Jessi, Emilia Pérez tells the story of a transgender gangster escaping from the mob in Mexico, combining musicals and crime drama. It has garnered mixed reviews in the lead-up to the Oscars 2025.

A record-breaking Oscars 2025
With Emilia Pérez earning 13 nominations, the most ever for a film not in the English language, this year's Oscars have made film history. This record-breaking achievement surpasses Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001) and Roma (2018), both of which received 10 nominations. Only three films in Academy Awards history, All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land, have received more nominations, with 14 each.
Meanwhile, Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of the musical, has also made history as the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Oscar. Gascón joins a competitive Best Actress field, including Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) and Demi Moore (The Substance), both of whom garnered acclaim last year.
Director Jacques Audiard, whose film tells the story of a mob escape in Mexico turned into a musical, celebrated this milestone, saying:
“This recognition is a celebration of the global world we live in.”

Mixed reactions following Oscars 2025 nods
Written and directed by French filmmaker Audiard, Netflix’s controversial crime musical Emilia Pérez has sparked debates online after earning 13 Oscar nominations, the most for any movie this year.
The main character Pérez (starring Gascón) is a Mexican cartel leader who works with a lawyer to undergo gender-affirming surgery, fake her own death, and start a new life as her authentic self. While critics have praised its storytelling and trans representation, reflected in a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, audiences have been more divided.
Social media users quickly voiced their surprise over the film’s numerous nominations at the Oscars 2025. X user @JeffDLowe shared a GIF from Emilia Pérez and commented:
"Quite possibly the worst movie ever (mid-scores from audiences & critics) to get double digit nominations. Baffling."
The film has also faced backlash in Mexico, where it is set, for its cultural portrayal and perceived “stereotypes.” Despite this, it continues to thrive during awards season, previously becoming the second most-nominated film in Golden Globes history.
