The first trailer for Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* was released online, offering a first look at the group of anti-heroes in the film. It featured the returns of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, rounding off the group.
However, the trailer also gave a glimpse of Lewis Pullman's Bob. For those unaware, Pullman will be portraying the villain Sentry, also known as Robert Reynolds in the comics.
In the comic books, Sentry is one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe. He is essentially Marvel’s version of Superman, but his complex personality sets him apart from DC's Man of Steel. Sentry is depicted as a forgotten hero with a dark side.
Sentry's origins explored amidst the Thunderbolts* trailer
Sentry first appeared in Sentry #1 in July 2000, created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee. In 1947, scientists attempted to recreate the Super Soldier Serum, but the project was fragmented over the next 30 years. Ten years later, Robert Reynolds broke into a lab and discovered the Golden Sentry Serum, which gave him his powers.
His transformation killed his partner and the lab guards, leading to his pursuit by Project: Sentry, who sought to test his abilities. Realizing that they didn’t intend to use his powers for good, Robert chose to become a hero. He sewed his own suit and debuted as the Sentry in front of the world.
Gaining respect as a traditional superhero, Sentry fell in love with Lindy, whom he married. However, she noticed his addiction to meth, and taking the serum may have unleashed something darker in him: the Void, a shadowy monster that mirrored Sentry’s dark side.
To stop the Void, Sentry sought the help of Reed Richards and Doctor Strange, making everyone, including himself, forget that he ever existed—causing the Void to disappear.
Years later, Robert discovered his memories had been implanted in writer Paul Jenkins' mind, allowing Jenkins to keep Sentry alive by publishing his story as a comic series.
What is Thunderbolts* about?
With Sentry set to debut in the upcoming Thunderbolts* film, the trailer shows the group assembling to face a bigger threat. Although plot details remain scarce, it appears each member is sent on individual missions that eventually lead them to encounter Bob in a secure bunker.
How Sentry fits into the story is still unclear, but the trailer hints at his "forgotten hero" arc, as he is first seen in a hospital gown, confused about the events unfolding. The film also stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, reprising her role as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
Thunderbolts* is produced by Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, and written by Lee Sung Jin, Joanna Calo, and Eric Pearson. Pearson has previously contributed to the MCU with his work on Black Widow and Thor: Ragnarok.
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* hits theaters on May 2, 2025. Schreier is best known for his work on films like Robot & Frank (2012), a sci-fi comedy-drama about a man befriending a robot, and Paper Towns (2015), a coming-of-age mystery based on John Green’s novel. He also directed several episodes of the hit A24 series Beef (2023).
