In Woman of the Hour, Daniel Zovatto plays the serial killer, Rodney Alcala. He was responsible for murdering over 100 women and young girls in California and New York in the 1970s.
What is the story of Rodney Alcala from Woman of the Hour?
Woman of the Hour recounts the true story of the serial killer, Rodney Alcala, and his many victims who were assaulted and killed over a period of 10 years in the 1970s.
The movie especially revolves around his appearance on The Dating Game show in September 1978, while he was in the midst of a gruesome killing spree in California. His brazenness is best displayed by the fact that he turned up on national television, in front of millions of viewers, despite being a fugitive.
During the show's fateful episode, Rodney competed with two other men and won over the episode's bachelorette, Cheryl Bradshaw. The two were set on a date, but Cheryl canceled it as she found him "really creepy." Her gut instinct saved her from meeting a grim fate, unlike many of the women who crossed Alcala's path.
Following his television appearance, Rodney continued his killing spree for another year before getting caught in July 1979. After news of his arrest and subsequent trial made headlines, Rodney became known as The Dating Game serial killer.
He was convicted of seven murders and sentenced to death after multiple trials and appeals. However, it is now believed that he assaulted and murdered over 100 women and young girls.
Rodney Alcala spent the rest of his life in jail and died on July 24, 2021, at the age of 77 from natural causes.
