At San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday, July 27, 2024, more details about Captain America 4 were revealed by Marvel Studios. One of the biggest reveals to come out of it was that actor Giancarlo Esposito would be starring as Sidewinder, the King of the Serpent Society, in the upcoming movie. He described the role as a "dream come true" to the fans gathered during the Hall H presentation.
"It's a dream come true. It was fan casting that linked us together and we started to talk. There's a lot of guessing about who I really am. But to be with this cast, especially Anthony Mackie... Can I say it? Wow! I can finally unleash it. I am the King of the Serpent Society. I am Sidewinder!" revealed Esposito.

With Sidewinder appearing in Captain America 4, which is titled Captain America: Brave New World, fans will also get to see the Serpent Society finally in action. However, it looks like Esposito will be playing a visually different version of the character in the film. Outfitted with guns and tactical vests, his version seems different from how the character is seen in the comics.
With the character set to appear in the film, let's take a look at his comic book storyline.
Exploring Captain America 4 villain Sidewinder's comic book storyline
In the comics, Sidewinder is created by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, and George Perez. He first appeared in Marvel Two-In-One #64 in March 1980, is usually associated with the Serpent Society, and formed the group as well. His storyline started when he was hired by Roxxon to get the Serpent Crown. He was successful in the mission and decided to form his own group after.
This is when he came up with the Serpent Society. Having the ability to teleport, thanks to his cloak, he promised those joining his group that they would never be arrested. This attracted more snake-themed villains to join the group, and thus the Serpent Society was formed.
However, he would eventually be betrayed by the Serpent Society, thanks to Viper infiltrating the group. He survived the ordeal and even got his revenge on the society, but eventually retired from being a villain.
Giancarlo Esposito previously teased his involvement in Captain America 4
The involvement of Giancarlo Esposito was revealed earlier this year. Talking at the Phoenix Fan Convention on May 25, 2024, Esposito originally teased that he had finally been cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but didn't reveal for what film and role.
However, news eventually came out that he was cast in Captain America 4 following set leaks. He promised that his character would appear in a series too.
"The MCU has knocked on my door and it’s a role you won’t predict. It will be teased and there will be a series afterwards," said Esposito at the 2024 Phoenix Fan Fusion convention.
The first glimpse at Esposito as Sidewinder was provided in the recent trailer for Captain America 4, but it was still unknown as to who the actor will be portraying in the film. With him now playing Sidewinder, he joins Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/ Captain America, Harrison Ford as Red Hulk, Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, and more.
