The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man 4 still remains a mystery, but it looks like Sony and Marvel Studios may have finally found a director for the upcoming film. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in talks to take over the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man franchise from previous director Jon Watts.

The reports of Destin Daniel Cretton being in the running for directing Spider-Man 4 were first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and then further corroborated by Deadline. This would make Cretton the fourth director to helm a Spider-Man film. Deadline has also reported that actors Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and Zendaya (M.J.) are in talks to return as well.

Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who previously penned Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, will be writing Spider-Man: 4 as well. However, plot details for the film aren't available as of now. Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige will be producing the film, which will be another partnership between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios.

It's currently unclear when the film will hit theaters, while details on when the filming will start remain unknown now.

Destin Daniel Cretton is attached to other MCU projects alongside Spider-Man 4

Before he dives into making Spider-Man 4, Destin Daniel Cretton already shares a history with Marvel Studios. He directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the studio, which was also one of the bigger theatrical superhero releases following the pandemic.

Cretton has also been enlisted to direct a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but it currently remains unknown when that project will materialize. Cretton has also been developing and directing a few episodes of the upcoming Wonder Man series for Disney+ starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, but the series is currently unannounced by Marvel Studios.

Destin Daniel Cretton was also slated to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but exited the project later. He was recently replaced by The Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, who took over the project. The film was also renamed Avengers: Doomsday, and it will be starring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

If the talks go through, then Cretton will be the fourth director to helm a Spider-Man film, following the likes of Sam Raimi, Marc Webb, and Jon Watts. Why Watts isn't returning remains unknown.

What can fans expect from Spider-Man 4?

Fans can expect Spider-Man 4 to deal with the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and explore a more vulnerable Peter Parker. At the end of that film, Peter tells Doctor Strange to cast a spell that will make everyone forget him in order to save the Multiverse. Telling him to say his goodbyes, Strange cast the spell and made everyone forget who Peter Parker was.

Fans can certainly expect to receive a new kind of Spider-Man film with a new director in charge and also hope to see a film that will dig deep into Peter Parker's loneliness.
