Hope Solo is one of the most prominent U.S. athletes who cemented her name as one of the best female goalkeepers in soccer. She was born in Richland, Washington on July 30, 1981. She started playing soccer at a very young age and went on to pursue the sport at the University of Washington.

She switched to being a consolidated goalkeeper with the Washington Huskies Women's Soccer team under the guidance of coach Lesle Gallimore and former USWNT soccer player Amy Griffin. Solo became the best player ever to play in the Pac-10. At the beginning of her professional career, Solo played for the Philadelphia Charge, followed by Göteborg FC in the Swedish Premier Division, and Olympique Lyonnais in the French First Division.

In Untold: Hope Solo vs. U.S. Soccer, she talks about her time growing up, a difficult relationship with her father who was not always around, and how soccer helped shape her life.

During the inaugural season of the National Women's Soccer League in 2013, Solo was already one of the biggest names in women's soccer. However, she was also one of the most polarizing off-field figures in the sport by then.

During the 2007 FIFA World Cup, Solo was benched in a semi-final game against Brazil leading to a 4-0 loss. Hope Solo publicly called out coach Greg Ryan's decision, leading to a backlash. She had also been publicly intoxicated and involved in driving-under-influence incidents during her meteoric rise as a part of the U.S. Women's Soccer team.

However, she faced major backlash from the team after calling the Swedish team "a bunch of cowards" following the 2016 Rio Olympics. This led to a six-month suspension with no pay and severe backlash from her teammates. However, in the Netflix documentary, she vehemently mentions how the decision to terminate her contract and blacklist her from the team was due to her demand for equal pay for women in soccer.

Solo claims in the documentary that she was being punished for her struggle for fair pay which initially also included her teammates Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, and Rebecca Sauerbrunn. They filed an equal employment opportunity complaint against the US Soccer Federation in March 2016 alleging s*x-based salary discrimination in the workplace.

Solo and her teammates' fight began after the United States women's national team won the 2015 World Cup. Solo asserts that the American women's soccer team was informed that they were not permitted to speak with her and they listened. Since then, Solo has not featured for the national team and has remained a controversial figure.
