Kirat Assi (Harkirat Kaur Assi) grew up in West London and worked as a radio presenter in 2009. At the age of 32, she became Facebook friends with Bobby Jandu, which grew into a romantic relationship over time.

During their whole relationship, the two only interacted via WhatsApp, Skype, and Messenger and even got virtually engaged at some point. However, Kirat's demands to meet Bobby face-to-face were denied repeatedly with outlandish excuses that ranged from him getting shot, and having a brain tumor, to being in a coma.

Over time, Kirat became consumed with Bobby, leading her to suffer from severe health issues. She lost her job, friends, and savings due to the mental and emotional toll their relationship took on her.

She ended up hiring a private detective to find out Bobby's whereabouts, only to discover that she had been catfished for the past 10 years by her own cousin sister, Simran Bhogal. To make matters worse, Kirat had been confiding in Simran about her relationship issues with 'Bobby' the whole time.

While speaking to the Guardian in January 2022, she addressed the damage caused by the harrowing experience:

"I could have met someone real, had a baby during that time. But the other impact has been on my mental and physical health.”

Kirat filed a civil case against her cousin and was awarded a handsome settlement along with a private apology from Simran.

Now in her 40s, Kirat runs the website kiratassi.co.uk, which aims to spread awareness of her catfishing ordeal and also offers resources to people dealing with similar issues.
