Descendants: The Rise of the Red, or Descendants 4, the latest installment of the Descendants franchise, was released on July 12, 2024. It's going to debut on Disney Channel scheduled for August 9, 2024.
The film, Descendants 4, opens with a remarkable tribute to Cameron Boyce who played Cruella de Vil’s son, Carlos in the previous installments. The actor unexpectedly passed away in 2019. Precisely, this is the first film in the series made without Boyce.
In the opening scene, China Anne McClain's character gazes at Cameron Boyce's (Carlos) photo before Auradon Prep welcomes villainous kids. Descendants 4 pays tribute to Carlos while acknowledging that he is no longer with them. While the new film has made changes to the cast, no one has replaced Boyce's character, Carlos in this installment.
Cameron Boyce passed away in 2019 at just 20 years of age due to epilepsy just before the premiere of Descendants 3. His passing deeply affected the cast and crew. Dara Reneé, on-screen Uliana, mentioned in an interview with People on June 12, 2023:
“We could not have done this without him. Descendants would not be what it is without him. You just can't continue a story without paying tribute to the most important part of Descendants.”
This new Disney+ film, Descendants 4, depicts the adventures of the children of Disney villains and heroes in the enchanting worlds of Auradon and the Isle of the Lost. Princess Red, Queen of Hearts from Wonderland's daughter, is invited to Auradon Prep by Uma, the headmistress.
The Queen of Hearts hates Auradon and Cinderella. She thinks of this as her chance for revenge. When she arrives at Auradon, the Queen of Hearts leads a coup. Red must team up with Cinderella's perfectionist daughter Chloe to stop her. They travel back in time using a magical pocket watch to stop Red's mother's
Cameron’s role in the Descendants 4
Just before the Descendants 3 premiere, Cameron died from complications from epilepsy. Almost 2 years after the third film, in Descendants: The Royal Wedding, his absence was also addressed various times.
In the animated television special, Mal expresses her wish for Carlos to have been present, a sentiment echoed by her friends. This scene subtly indicated to fans that Carlos's character would not be replaced, leaving his absence unexplained but respected.
Currently, the cast has changed significantly without Cameron Boyce. He used to star as Cruella de Vil's son Carlos.
Descendants 4 features a new cast alongside returning favorites. Kylie Cantrall plays Red, the Queen of Hearts' daughter, and Malia Baker plays Cinderella and Prince Charming's daughter Chloe Charming. China Anne McClain as Uma and Melanie Paxson as the Fairy Godmother returns. Paolo Montalbán and Brandy reprise their 1997 Cinderella and King Charming roles.

After arriving in Auradon, Carlos' fear of dogs and belief that they are dangerous changes. Carlos had an irrational fear of dogs because he was raised to think they were dangerous. Things changed when Carlos landed in Auradon and met Dude, an actual dog. In no time, they grew inseparable.
Meanwhile, the new storyline and characters in Descendants 4 add a new aspect to the franchise's fourth film. Disney+ and Disney Channel take the film to a wide audience, continuing the Descendants series' journey of magic, adventure, and nostalgia.
