Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to the classic Ridley Scott 1982 film Blade Runner is in headlines for unexpected reasons. As per Hollywood Reporter, the production company of the film, Alcon Entertainment, has sued Elon Musk and his vehicle company Tesla as well as Warner Bros. Discovery for their alleged artificial intelligence-fueled copyright infringement of images from the Denis Villeneuve-directed film.

They have accused Musk and his company of misappropriating the film for promoting its Cybercab at an event on October 10, 2024. Warner Bros. Discovery has been named in the lawsuit for allegedly facilitating the partnership.

The main reason behind this lawsuit, according to the producer, is Elon Musk's political leaning and his 'extreme political and social views,' which the company doesn't want to attach itself to.

Elon Musk's vehicle company Tesla is being sued by Alcon Entertainment, one of the producers of Denis Villeneuve-directed film Blade Runner 2049. The reason behind this lawsuit is reported to be copyright infringement. Musk is accused of illegally using imagery from the film to promote Tesla’s new Cybercar called 'robotaxi.'

The Los Angeles-based movie and television production company said that the defendants had requested to use 'an iconic image' from the film for an event held on October 10, 2024, but they denied permission. However, Tesla used the image despite the denial of request.

The lawsuit claims that during the unveiling of the car, which was live-streamed by Elon Musk, the images that were used, were AI-generated and looked similar to some of the scenes in the film.

The company said:

“A.I.-created images mirroring scenes from ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ including one featuring a Ryan Gosling look-alike.”

Alcon has also named Warner Bros. Discovery in the lawsuit for allegedly facilitating the event. According to the complaint, Alcon's denial of the request to use the film's images is attributed to Elon Musk's 'highly politicized, capricious and arbitrary behavior.'

The company does not want its film 'to be affiliated with Musk, Tesla, or any Musk company.'

The film is a sequel to Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner. It is set in a futuristic world where humans are capable of creating highly intelligent bioengineered humans known as replicants for slave labor. But their consciousness propels some of them to rebel against their human masters.

To contain the rebels, special officers called the 'blade runners' are assigned to find and kill the rogue replicants. Blade Runner 2049 is set in 2049, where Officer K, played by Ryan Gosling, is assigned a similar task.

But in his pursuit, he uncovers a secret that could destabilize the structure of society.

The film was praised for its incredible visuals, storytelling, acting, and production value. But despite the praises and accolades, it did not perform well at the box office.

However, over time the film has managed to attract a cult following, similar to its prequel. The film is often considered an underrated masterpiece.

Blade Runner 2049 is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+.
