With Descendants: The Rise of Red, the fourth and latest film of the franchise releasing on July 12, 2024, fans are already wondering if Descendants 5 is a viable possibility in the future.
The official synopsis of Descendants 4 reads:
“Daughters of the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella travel back in time to prevent a coup in Auradon.”
The anticipation for Descendants 5 has been fuelled by many factors. Firstly, Descendants 4 ends with a cliffhanger that suggests the story might continue. Secondly, several production developments within Disney point toward the possibility that Descendants 5 might be in the works.
In Descendants: The Rise of Red, Red, and Chloe, the daughters of the Queen and Hearts and Cinderella, respectively, use time travel to prevent the Queen of Hearts from turning evil. However, the ending of the movie suggests that such a method has repercussions and Descendants 5 might be about those.

Gary Marsh and the possibility of Descendants 5
On September 21, 2021, Deadline reported that Gary Marsh, then President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney Branded Television, would step down at the end of 2021. As part of a deal with Disney, Marsh would start his own production company to create movies and shows for Disney's streaming platforms.
Under the aegis of his production company, Marsh planned out several productions. Two of these reportedly included two new Descendants films. One of them has come out recently in the form of Descendants 4, which March executive produced.
In a similar vein, The Direct reported in an article published on July 14, 2024, that the recent Descendants film is one of the two planned by Marsh initially. Descendants 5 might be greenlit for production if the currently streaming one receives good responses from the audience.
Descendants 4 ends with a cliffhanger
Descendants: The Rise of Red ends with the actions of Red and Chloe preventing a tragedy in Auradon. The earlier part of the film shows that the Queen of Hearts compels Red to severely punish Cinderella since the Queen of Hearts wants to take revenge for a prank that was once played on her when she was a student at Auradon (called the Merlin Academy then).
Much of the film is about how Red and Chloe team up to successfully prevent Uliana from playing a prank on Bridget (the younger version of the Queen of Hearts) that would eventually turn her into an evil queen. They travel back in time in order to achieve this.
As the film nears its end, Red and Chloe get back to the present and discover that their efforts in the past have salvaged the present, as the Queen of Hearts is found to be a loving and caring woman in the present.
However, Descendants 4 ends with a cliffhanger. As there is general merriment and dancing all around, certain closing lines are delivered by Uma’s voiceover. The message is suggestive:
“Everybody got what they wanted. But getting what you want can be dangerous. Especially when you mess with the fabric of time. You didn’t think that was the end of this story, did you?”
These words are followed by Uma’s laughter and when the credits roll after that, viewers wonder if this was a teaser for Descendants 5. Further, during an interview with J-14 on July 11, 2024, Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker both said that they were ‘down’ for Descendants 5.
Descendants 4: A brief recap, and cast
Descendants: The Rise of Red follows the events of Descendants 3. Uma is the new principal of Auradon Prep and invites Red, the daughter of the whimsical and tyrannical ruler of Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts, to the school.
Matters are made complicated by the fact that the Queen of Hearts cannot tolerate Cinderella and wants to stage a coup in Auradon. As Red discovers the evil intentions of her mother, she shakes hands with Chloe, Cinderella and Prince Charming’s daughter, and both of them travel back in time to change the course of the present.
