George Miller has a treat for Mad Max fans once more, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga releasing in theatres on May 24, 2024. The movie, which tells the titular character's backstory, will take us over 15 to 20 years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road. The new movie will focus on her trying to get revenge on Warlord Dementus.
The events of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will eventually also lead into the story of how she came across Immortan Joe and became one of his trusted warriors. However, details of that tale are already available in prequel comics which show how the character was originally supposed to be one of his wives and a breeder — women who are held captive by Immortan Joe so that they can birth him more war pups.
But due to her being infertile and not being able to breed, she became an imperator.
Furiosa wasn't a breeder as she was infertile
During the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, a prequel comic with the same title was put out that explained the backstory for many characters like Immortan Joe, his wives, and Furiosa herself. These comics were based on George Miller's own ideas and fleshed these characters out more.
Furiosa was originally born in the fertile land called The Green Place but was kidnapped as a child from there, with her mother being murdered, and her ending up with Warlord Dementus. She was later traded to be one of Immortan Joe's wives who made use of women to breed more warboys for his army. But with Furiosa being infertile, Joe gave her off to one of his imperators.
Over here, she learned how to fight. Following her teacher's death, she gained the title of Imperator and commanded a war rig effectively, becoming one of Immortan Joe's most trusted and feared warriors.
Who are the breeders in Mad Max: Fury Road?
Mad Max: Fury Road focused heavily on the many wives of Immortan Joe who ran away from the villain to live a free life. All these women were held captive by Immortan Joe and were given the role of breeders. They were used to harvest milk and to give birth to more war boys so that Joe's army could grow.
In Mad Max: Fury Road, with the help of Charlize Theron's character, these women escape. This causes the long chase in the film to start, with the titular character also joining in to help them escape the army of war boys.
