His Three Daughters is an American drama film, enangled around the theme of death and grief. The film is written and directed by the American filmmaker Azazel Jacobs who is known for his experimental works including The GoodTimesKid, The Lovers, and French Exit.

Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, and Natasha Lyonne, the movie tells the story of three estranged sisters, who reunite to take care of their terminally ill father, as he awaits his impending death. It premiered on September 9, 2023, at the Toronto International Film Festival. On September 6, 2024, the film was released theatrically, after which it was made available for streaming on Netflix from September 20, 2024.

His Three Daughters is rated R, by the Motion Picture Association for its depiction of strong language and drug use.

The entire plot of the 101-minute-long film is deeply embedded in themes of intense grief. The relationship between the three daughters often develops into bickering that involves the use of strong language.

Rachel faces unemployment and escapes her reality by smoking marijuana every day. Her boyfriend struggles with alcohol addiction and drinks himself to sleep. These scenes are highly unsuitable for younger audiences, giving the movie an 'R' rating.


What is the story of His Three Daughters?

His Three Daughters tells the story of three sisters, who reunite in their New York City apartment. Katie and Christina are Vincent's biological daughters when Rachel is raised by their father. Rachel has taken care of their father, throughout his illness. Vincent has been affected by terminal cancer, and the doctors declare he has little time left.

Most parts of the film are shot inside a New York Apartment, providing more space to highlight the character's true emotions. The official synopsis of the film on Rotten Tomatoes explains the characters as:

Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father's apartment -- much to the chagrin of her stepsisters, who share a different mother and worldview.
